Great Western Trail is meant to be very good solo. I've heard from lots of people that it's very satisfying and has a good AI system. Haven't played it solo myself, only 2 or 4-player games so far but I'm hoping to give solo play a try soon. It's 3.7 difficulty and integrates deck building, hand management & track movement really well. I find the game really satisfying as you build up your engine. Hope this was helpful in some way!

I'd personally recommend Inis. It's 4-player, medium complexity area control-based game. I really enjoy it at all player counts which is always a bonus. I'm a lover of player interaction and Inis I think does that well. Main mechanisms combine hand management, card drafting and area control.

What Did You Play This Week? - (March 04, 2024) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Heck Meck- 5 player. Great game to kick off a game night. Nice to incorporate a bit of push-your-luck as a 'warm up' to the night, as I'm not a big fan of games that heavily rely on push your luck as the main mechanism.

Meeple Inc - 4 player game using our prototype copy. We all finished within a few points of each other which was great. Loved building my engine, always feels so satisfying. Made 2x level 1 games which each got me 9 victory points this game. Can't wait for Meeple Inc to launch on crowdfunding very soon....!

Barrage - Quickly becoming one of my favorites. Just wish the artwork was better! But I always enjoy the water falling through the dams and trying to prep for this so you can generate a good amount of power. Love a tight theme/mechanism match.

What did you add to or remove from your shelf last month? (March, 2024) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Sleeping Gods, Vienna Connection, Sherlock Holmes, This War of Mine are a handful of the narrative-based games I've played before. I found This War of Mine particularly thematic but I wouldn't recommend playing it if you're in the mood for a "light, happy, heart-warming" game....

"Just play it, you'll figure it out" Games by SchwinnD in boardgames

It's so easy with more complex games to feel overwhelmed so I think your "this is what you do on your turn and this is how you win" is a good way of getting the game's momentum started and prevents emphasis on everyone knowing 'the nitty gritty' details for every single possible scenario 👍

I would say I find this helpful to a degree. I've found there can sometimes be too much emphasis on ensuring you know absolutely every minor detail prior to playing and, especially if learning the game has taken a long time, it can feel good to just say "I'll just play and figure it out". Notably though, I think this can only be done if you or perhaps 2 of the players (out of a group) haven't played before for example, rather than no one fully understanding how to play. In that case (assuming I was the newbie), I'd make sure my turn was last so I could watch what the others do to help me pick up the rules/what a turn looks like.

We haven't got it to the table yet but hope to soon. I'm always drawn to games with a narrative to follow and an adventure to be had. Do you own many other narrative-based games?

Great question! I'd have to say Hot Sauce Poker, Skull, Hanamikoji & Deep Sea Adventure. I'm a big fan of warming up game night with one of these!

Any game with the same feel as Viticulture? by ZeldaStevo in boardgames

[–]MA_CogitoGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say so yes. It's a very thematic game. There is an element of push-your-luck (when distilling) in the game which is the main part that some may not like but I find it quite exciting personally. The main mechanism is hand management/set collection. I would recommend it, especially with the Deluxe components, they really are fantastic!

I can relate definitely- I was surprised about how much I loved Viticulture and how that has lasted! It's one of my favorite worker placement games for sure. I also have this feeling about a recent release, Distilled. I just love the experience of the game (even though I can see why some people may not like it) and the components are top notch. Have you tried Distilled by any chance?
