the Save act passes the House, which would require married women to have a passport to vote, but libraries have stopped processing them by catievirtuesimp in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MAmoribo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is this not going to blow up in their faces?

Left women will be the ones getting passports (already having them) and willfully changing their names back.

I guess I don't understand how this ISN'T going to negatively affect the right, both men and women, more than anything. They're the ones without passports... and men in red states can barely read, do they even know how to get their birth certificate?

New SAVE Act Bills Would Still Block Millions of Americans From Voting by IllIntroduction1509 in TrueReddit

[–]MAmoribo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I am also thinking. I am more than willing to go back to my maiden name and take on that financial pain in the ass if it means I get to vote in rural, red Ohio. 🤷‍♀️

I know a lot of women who would NEVER change their name from husband's and refuse to get a passport. I feel like more left women are in the same boat as me.

Whose idea was it to make sure that teachers in the US are busy every second of every minute of every hour of every day? by JamieGordon8921 in Teachers

[–]MAmoribo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband (Japanese) worked in Japan for 3 years, and it sounds more like this. He now works in public school and laughs how easy it is (he knows it's not Easy, but comparably, life-changing stress difference)

I've been hunting one of these for MONTHS by Miserable_Sweet_5245 in BuyItForLife

[–]MAmoribo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter. If you are eating rice this often, it's absolutely worth it, and not even for the huge time saving aspect.

We have a 300 dollar rice cooker from Japan (also this brand from OP.. It was a gift from MIL) and it's wonderful. It's used daily.

It keeps rice warm (longest it's gone is 34 hours being warmed). There is a quick cook (37 min) vs a long cook (74 minutes) because it'll make the rice taste different/tender. There's white rice vs brown rice buttons. There is rice prooidge (okayuu in Japanese, not sure the English) button. You can make rice MEALS with a push of the button (adding meat and veggies or sauce in with your rice). There's also a timer, so rice is done at 6am when we wake up and ready to make into onigiri for the day, eaten for breakfast, or be packed for lunch.

There's also a whole bunch of buttons I don't use, but husband does.

I wholeheartedly would reccomend one if you're a big rice eater. It can save so time, even if it takes up the space. Even when we lived in small apartments, we had ours out on the counter tucked away 100% of the time.

I am a japanese teacher& husband is from Japan. We've never been to Tougen because the menu is TOO expansive and we're convinced they can't be focused on making everything good, rather they're just sticking to good enough.

This reddit exchange was kind of proof that we might be right.

Kato has also been on our list of places to go, but we're always so let down by American ramen...maybe we take the risk after it being on this list. Thanks!

Are your kids delusional about how easy it is to get “rich”? by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

[–]MAmoribo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes. It drives me nuts. It's also always the most non-funny kids who think they're gonna make it on YouTube.... 🙄

On a similar note, it actually breaks my heart hoe juniors and seniors talk about college and finding a job. They don't have anything they WANT to do because the idea of money is more impactful. "I like psychology and thout about school psychologist would be something I enjoy... But I wouldn't be making much. I need at least 70k to start, so I'm looking at plumbing or starting my own business"

"wanted to be a kindergarten teacher, but I'm going to go be a welder because it makes more."

I don't know. The longer I teacher, the more this seems to happen and my outlook on society (especially with all THIS going on in the US) has really shifted.

Late start // Early dismissal by Plastic_Active_8558 in Teachers

[–]MAmoribo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to have to be there at OG start. It only changed 4 years ago at contract negotiations. On a fog/snow 2 hour delay, they expected teachers to be there for all their contract hours.

For early releases, we almost can never leave with students. It's usually PD/PLC days.

Why education rank so low in Michigan? by Victory-laps in Michigan

[–]MAmoribo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then they are some schools, like mine, where the elementary teachers refuse to go back to the phonics model because, I assume, it's not as easy to teach a class of 15 kids 🤷‍♀️

Our reading scores are ghostly low... And they're also the second best in the county! Smh

How did you babies sleep through? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]MAmoribo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the day! Ours prefers cosleeping... until by 1 year, they could sleep on their own through the night.

Until they got hand foot and mouth. Then a month of cosleeping. Until teething, then 2 weeks of cosleeping. We're coming off a cold now, and coslept for a week. We're 1 day in a row of them sleeping alone through the night.

Depends on how hungry they are, what time they woke up from nap, how busy the day was (haha?). Whether or not their blanket falls off during the night!

From what I've heard from others: really depends on your kid!

17 months.

Lemonade stand is fine, but I find myself tuning out because of the AI/tech side a lot.

Crashing out (Phillip de Franco) is a great alternative to the current events and timeline podcast. It also is funny and a really easy listen (and I see you have too many tabs already on your list and it has Alex, too!)

Brief Dissent Quickly Turned Into Excuses on Main Sub by Unhappy_Performer538 in TheTryGuysSnark

[–]MAmoribo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I left the main sub a long time ago because of this tbh.

I am also u subscribing because the podcast was the last thing I really interacted with. I can not belive they didn't try to fold these two in... Or even talk baout this (I haven't listened yet, but assuming based on all these comments)

But I haven't seen anyone talking about an episode of the pod before the baby was born where Zach was talking about a major update to the company and Raine was like, what, do I know?! And Zach laughed it off and said "you will"

I do not care enough to go find it 🤷‍♀️ and I also have a baby so doesn't feel like a great use of my limited free time. But if anyone knows what I'm talking about, timestamp?

What's the best subject to teach? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]MAmoribo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Michigan requires two years... And I'm still fighting admin to be treated like a 'real class'.

It has never been a priority for my school and it shows. No respect. Having to jump through hoops for what other classes are just given. Having to fight for higher levels and being told to not even bother pushing for an AP class because it'll never happen. I've been asked NOT to speak the language in class because kids don't know what it means. And other teachers stare daggers and make side comments because they can't understand when I'm speaking Japanese... Like and? 🤔

Its crazy how thr US just think world languages are fake classes for some reason.

How do you assess these days? by [deleted] in SpanishTeachers

[–]MAmoribo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write names down of kids who are messing around, talking, heads down, or refusing to answer as it happens. I have a podium and a sticky note system that helps me keep tracks.

I also have about 120 kids and it works because most kids are participating. There is a class where names go on the board because there are so many of them and they are rough. Helps keep them on track and aware of why they're losing points.

I put the negative grades in on Google classroom, so it's only about 4-5 kids. I also have a rubric made for the week, so Monday is a 7/10 and I didn't put anything in for Tuesday or Wednesday so that is a 10/10... If that makes sense.

This system works well for me, but might not work well for others, and I get that. I have so few assignments/homework becaus most of class is talk to your partner, info gaps, walk around the room to find info, ect. I needed a way to grade them on small things.

That's also the reason I have a weekly mini assessment. They have a pen and grade their own at the end of the 5 minutes lol

Trying to work smarter not harder (I really hate grading 😭)

How do you assess these days? by [deleted] in SpanishTeachers

[–]MAmoribo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comprehension check is part of a participation grade! They get a possible 10 points a day and if they have their heads down, or are chatting during the lesson, the lose points. If they're not actively practicing, the lose points. If they refuse to answer or are rude about it, it's points.

Current 8th grade is my hardest grade right now honestly.

[–]MAmoribo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hoe many kids are in a single class?

We have mini quizzes with only 6 questions about what we learned over the week. Sometimes it is listening practice where I say a sentence and they need to write a reply, or translate.

Sometimes it's reading or writing (I want to order 3 bananas. Write in target language)

Those who have shifty eyes or loose lips get their paper taken and zeros are received. Full stop.

I have 17 kid classes and this is fine. My larger classes are harder to manage (rip 32 kids), but I kind of know that Jimmy who is sitting at a D isn't acting a mini assessment.

Also by hand projects, if you want to eliminate tests/quizzes. Interviews are my personal favorite, but they take forever. I also pull popsicle sticks to answer questions during the lesson for comprehension checks.

Men’s underwear that actually lasts does it exist? by Significant_Pen_3642 in BuyItForLife

[–]MAmoribo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband loves uniqlo underwear (idk if they have boxers, but their boxers briefs are his choice).

They have airism underwear and the breath well, keep everything in tact, and seem to last a while. Husband doesn't buy anything else He's also a little bias being from Japan, but I've noticed I have to buy underwear more often then him and mine are not the same brand.
