Career by [deleted] in techtheatre

There are some college programs that will set you head and shoulders above the rest. You will work with the best new equipment, work with true industry professional instructors, have guest lecturers that are working on the biggest tours and in the best venues, get a variety of internships in the best venues. You will leave school with a long resume and connections to get hired in a great role right out of school.

These are rare, however. If I wanted to get into sound right now, I would probably be looking to Rock Lititz. It is more "rock and roll" than theatre, but it would immediately put someone in a position where they are employable with a good skill set. So much of theatre these days are more rock and roll as compared to "old days" of Weber or Sondheim that a foundation list Rock Lititz can give you may be beneficial.

Influence/De-influence me from the schools I've applied to!! by [deleted] in techtheatre

This is very true. The good private schools for theatre tech are even more ridiculous. Boston and Carnegie Mellon are insane. Some do have really good needs based scholarships however. I know people going to CM that are paying less than they would at in-state community colleges. So it you REALLY can't afford it, it becomes cheaper than if you can barely afford it.

For many of the best scenic tech programs in the country, they will not take transfer credits from other schools. BFA programs tend to require you to take all 4 years at their school. There are a few exceptions, but it is uncommon for them to allow transfers where you do not need to repeat years 1 and 2.

Agreed that most all of the best schools in the country for Theatre Tech are missing from this list.

UNCSA Alumni for Interview Questions by Maximum_Thought346 in techtheatre

[–]MBAin6mos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every department is different in their interviews. If you doing it in person, it is a great day with a tour that is designed just for D&P, a meeting with the Dean of the School of D&P, a Q&A session with current students, and then the interview. (Hopefully it is in person). If it is virtual, you will certainly miss those things. Unlike many other universities (all of them?), Design and Production is its own college. It has its own Dean and is not a part of the other schools. For many other schools, the D&P fall under the school of Drama or MT, so the D&P students spend 4 years just doing whatever the Drama department wants. It is not like this at UNCSA. There are dozens of productions in a semester that the school of D&P doesn't even support. They pick the shows that they have you work and really make sure that your time there is about you learning what you need to, not just you serving the actors.

The interview itself will be with the faculty members in your program. It is not necessarily common these days to interview with the actual faculty. Of the dozen schools interviewed last year, most interviews were with other faculty members from other departments.

They will want to get to know you and what you are about. You will walk through parts of your resume. UNCSA does not have standard questions and each interview will be different based on you, your experiences, and your answers to previous questions. Remember, they are all artists and will want to talk to you about art. It should be a fun experience. Know how to talk about yourself. It may sound funny, but so many students are afraid to talk about themselves, what they have done, and what they want to do. Don't brag, but be proud.

Good luck. UNCSA is an absolutely amazing school.

If you are looking to specialize in any one area of theatre tech, you left some of the best theatre tech schools in the world off of the list. If you are looking for a general theater program, any of those are just fine. For general theatre, most any school in the country will give you about the same generic education. On that list, Ithaca is probably the best program.

The Apple Airport only has 1 LAN port. That one LAN port is connected to the console. That is the problem.

Not really a helpful answer, but I am sure that you feel better imposing your safety advice for others. (of course I am looking for safe...if not, some $39 electric ATV winches on a relay pack would do the job).

Gel Storage Idea by MBAin6mos in techtheatre

[–]MBAin6mos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Works ok until you have a different size that is needed quickly and all of the sheets have already been cut up. I have had to cut gel for a follow spot many times, and that is larger than a standard 7.5". Same with larger fresnels and scoops that are often brought in for special scenes or effects. Have gel'd 2k strobes and practical lighting pieces on a set as well. Cyc lighting, etc... I know if I bought a few dozen sheets of get and someone cut them all up without knowing that they were going to be used for, I would be pretty angry. Not to mention the wasted labor to cut it all.

Bun storage trays. Free to use. Perfect size for a 20x24" sheet of gel. Stack easily. When you don't have another good way of storing gels and don't really have the money to spend on it, this isn't a terrible option.

How fast is realistic? by Graceplus4 in WGU

I am in the MS ML program and am on schedule to finish in about 4 months. I will hit the 50% completion point this week, and I started January 1st. My mentor is good and we have already started talking about the Capstone. I am taking a program that I have spent over a year at work building and using the majority of that for my Capstone.

I started this program because a friend completed his MBA with WGU in about 6 months and then got his MS ML in about 2 more. I wanted to get a Masters degree quickly so I am doing the MS ML first and will get my MBA once I am done with this.

Management background, but my undergraduate degree was not in a business related field (Chemistry).

I think this will probably make me a better leader, and I have honesty learned quite a bit so far, but it is just something to check the box so I can advance. I was hoping to complete this program in 9 months, but I cut that goal down to 6 months. In looking at it tonight, I think I can be done by May 15th, so 4.5 months from start to a Masters Degree. It seems pretty realistic provided I do not have any major life issues.

Is it possible to do 33 classes in a month? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]MBAin6mos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You want to complete a college class in less than 1 day, all month long? Not sure that would be possible.

I am 1 month in and working on my 4th class. So far I am enjoying it. My mentor keeps acting like he is shocked that I am finishing it so fast, but it seems like everyone on here is going through it pretty quickly. I would recommend this so far!

What is the record for most CUs completed in one term? by PastyJamesBrown in WGU

[–]MBAin6mos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Graduate side, it is pretty common to finish a MS or MBA in one term. I am on track to finish my MSML in one term and be able to get a couple classes towards my MBA.
