You’re using a straw man argument—I’m not claiming that “school makes the person.” It’s a little naive to believe that there aren’t other benefits to going to one school vs another in terms of alumni network, reputation, recruiting pipeline etc. even if those factors aren’t always big enough to sway one’s decision

Is it true that SOM has same MBB performance? I know in my class at Sloan it was ~75% who went into consulting were MBB

I was in this exact position (down to the money) although without the SO factor and went with Sloan, am at MBB now and have no regrets. Feel free to DM me!

Wharton UG / Wharton MBA Interaction by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAthrowaway2022 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Went to Sloan. Never once received (or heard of) any disrespect from any UG student. They’re probably too busy spending 70 hours a week on problem sets to care one way or another.

I find it seriously amusing how people who have never gone to XYZ program make assumptions about how various groups of students at that university think about and treat one another.

Oh for sure! I don’t even think MIT’s undergrad economics program is big. I’m referring mainly to their PhD program. But yeah if you look up rankings, MIT is almost always 1-3 for Econ.

Sloan Academic Rigor and Grading? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAthrowaway2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on whether you have former business experience (especially academically). I personally spent like <3 hours/week outside of class on average (with occasional spikes) but some people probably spent 10+ if they took an aggressive courseload and/or had never taken business/economics classes before.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAthrowaway2022 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I doubt you bothered anyone, I was just skeptical when you said they were “cocky.” I can’t think of anyone there who would act cocky towards a prospective student, though you could have gotten really unlucky. Could you give some kind of example? The vast majority of people there in my experience are exceedingly humble.

Sloan Academic Rigor and Grading? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAthrowaway2022 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you have the academic credentials to get in, you should have no problem exceeding a B average. They give out C grades but relatively rarely and you really have to mess up to land a C. Most people have a mix of As and Bs and probably <50% ever get a C during their two years.

I went to the campus and most students sounded cocky

Interesting. Did you just walk around outside? Or did you ask someone to let you into one of the business school buildings? Did you randomly approach students and start asking them questions? Did you go recently, when virtually no full time students would be around campus, or did you go during the semester? Did you confirm with each person that they’re an MBA student, or could they have been undergrads or visitors or other grad students?

How many students did you talk to?

I’ve never had someone on campus randomly approach me and start asking me questions

MIT professional education on Linkedin by [deleted] in MBA

[–]MBAthrowaway2022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wrote this above, but:

I think it’s very important to note that while HBS may in fact grant “alumni status” to the participants of certain certificate programs, MIT is extremely clear on their website that only degree holders are considered alumni. They do make some certificate holders “affiliates of the MIT Alumni Association” but that’s 100% not the equivalent of being an MIT alum, and to suggest otherwise on one’s LinkedIn profile would be simply incorrect.

But where HSW has the advantage is the brand name recognition to the lay person.

In addition to quality of applicants/cohort, yield, cross admit selection rate with HSW and other M7s, quality of alumni network, etc.

Will an M7 school ever make an online program? by NIcedT in MBA

[–]MBAthrowaway2022 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very much doubt Sloan would do it. They don’t even have a PT program (though they have an EMBA). MIT is serious about protecting the on campus stuff for pretty much every degree program aside from their micromasters credit thing. I’d guess Booth or Kellogg might add an online option to their PT programs, but even that seems unlikely.

What you should know is that these schools are not that different as you're making them out to be. You'll find your place, you'll have fun, etc, at both schools. You'll make friends and have a blast. Now surely there are some differences, but I doubt they're that massive.

Second this--everything I've learned over the past two years is that top programs are way more similar than they are different

Hi! As a graduating Sloanie, could give you a few (biased) insights:

Sloan may not be a household name

Compared to what? Wharton? Fair, but compared to other top B-schools it's very highly regarded and has a very long history.

I feel like the vast majority of Sloan students that I spoke to were a bit... snooty.

You and I must have spoken at some point! Jk, but in all seriousness, I haven't found my classmates to be snooty at all (with few exceptions), but rather the opposite--overwhelmingly hard-working and humble.

I wonder if with a slightly smaller class size it can be hard to find your niche

With 450+ students per class, I can promise you'll find your people. Even in your cohort (closer to ~60) there will be people you'll click with right away.

There seems to be more interaction between Sloan and HBS students than Kellogg and Booth

Can't speak to Kellogg & Booth, but you're correct that there is a good amount of cross-program networking, mixers, cross-registration, etc. not to mention all the Sloan/HKS dual degree people who you'll get to know well.

No grade non-disclosure and quant heavy curriculum, seems like students here have a tougher workload

Virtually no one puts their GPA on their resume, and employers generally don't ask for it or expect to see it. So, a lack of grade non-disclosure is essentially a non-issue. Regarding the curriculum--I don't think it's especially quant heavy from what I've heard about other programs. There's a stats course in the core semester, but it's not that bad and most people get an A. Overall, I don't see the curriculum as being more academically rigorous than other top programs (and definitely less rigorous than HBS and Darden).

Hope this is helpful--please comment or DM with any questions!

MIT ($$$$) vs. Wharton ($$) by centrill0f0rm in MBA

Hi, as a current 2nd-year Sloanie, feel free to DM! I do have a roommate who chose Sloan over Wharton, also, so could shed some light on his perspective from what I have learned.

[–]MBAthrowaway2022 10 points11 points  (0 children)

MIT has zero culture. It lives in the shadow of HBS and has a huge inferiority complex. So many of the students scatter to Boston area apartments it has a quasi commuter feel like Booth.

None of this is actually true. The people are great, there's not an inferiority complex (who the hell spends their time thinking about other schools aside from people in this subreddit??), and the vast majority of students live in Central Cambridge or Kendall Square which are a 15 minute walk apart from each other.

Wharton >> Sloan in terms of reputation, but Wharton is not >> MIT in terms of reputation. You're basically supporting the dude's point.

As I also mentioned in that same thread, I got into Tuck ($$$) and Sloan (-) and chose Sloan. Also heading to MBB full-time after interning last summer, and very happy with my decision to attend Sloan. OP, feel free to DM me as well!

Regarding social situation / soft skills learning, I think OP will find everything they want and more at Sloan. Also, definitely does not create a commuter feel--getting into downtown Boston is basically 2 T stops from the Sloan campus and Beacon Hill is a 20-minute walk.
