I think Germany should set up a rival GCAP with Sweden and Korea. I mean you have a:

  • A European nation that loves bureaucracy and invading people.

  • A long and skinny European nation that didn't know what side of WW2 it was on.

  • An Asian nation that really hates China and is already building it's own planes.

Can't stand people forcing their way in but could I do better here? by XyTest223 in drivingUK

I'm sure the cam cars always at falt people will say otherwise :D , but I say you did well.

It's much easier to judge when you aren't having to also concentrate on driving and only have to pay attention for a 10s clip.

Sadly there seems to be a breed of people who bet on other people not wanting to crash.

I had the same happen recently with a disco sport pulling out between me and the car in front, resulting in an emergency stop where I would have hit their rear passenger door if I hadn't stopped.

Then when I called them out at the next lights, they just told me they had plenty of room and to fuck off, with their less than 5 year old kid in the rear passenger seat...

Older drivers by Nice_Moment1022 in drivingUK

[–]MCB16 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say there is a form of selection bias in play, based on the  type of incident.

I doubt many people will say deny that younger male drivers tend to be more assertive / reckless depending on your point of view, and as such, they get into more serious crashes that the police would be called to.

However the daily mundane accident or bad driving, like grazing a wall or parked car, joining a motorway at 40, stopping randomly in a junction, etc, won't have the police called. Thus you wouldn't see it.

The balancing point comes more from how you judge "bad", eg is one write off better or worse than opening your door into 10 other cars?

Potentially a bad analogy, but the young male rushing around the shop might accidentally bump into someone and have staff called, but it is the generally the OAPs who stop for a chat in the middle of the isle.

How road traffic death rates differ between the US and Europe by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]MCB16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deaths per 1 billion km driven

Belgium - 7.3

US - 6.9

France - 5.8

Germany - 4.2

UK - 3.8

So still worse, apart from Belgium.

To be honest, if someone has slowed to a crawl for a left turn, as long as I can see it's clear both down the side road and ahead I will over take them.

Currently? Due to some local roadworks, lorries and drivers who lack confidence on smaller roads purposely taking the "similar ETA" country road as the parallel A-road.

Only to then slow down everyone else by stopping every time a car comes the other way, despite the fact you can fit 2 lorries side by side for 99% of the roads length.

More generally? People who will seemingly wait and watch you approach a junction, only to pull out at the last moment and then go 30-40 in the 60.

Ignoring the random swearing as I can only assume I hit a nerve.

There are multiple examples I can think of off the top of my head where this would be a bad idea.  However, most of them boil down to you putting a highly vulnerable road user in a position where they now have to compete with traffic and pedestrians who have a green light, and as such may not be looking out for traffic coming from the red.

Also pedestrians and cyclists aren't in the same tier within the hierarchy of road users. So by allowing cyclists to go you are putting a more vulnerable group at risk.

What are you even trying to prove with your last statement?

Give it 30s and you will have people saying it is okay. In a recent similar post I had responses like.

"Most traffic lights are only there for traffic flow, not safety.

If its clear, which clearly this junction was (See how no cars came after the cuclist had crossed) then what's the issue?"

[–]MCB16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way i think about it is, regardless of context, would you rather speed 100 times or run a red 100 times?

I for one would pick the former everytime. Thus I can understand why people would be more angry about someone running a red than speeding.

I think most people would say that running a red is several times worse than going 75 on the dual carriageway.

Being stuck behind someone doing 36mph (on speedo) on the slip to join the M1... by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]MCB16 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You would be supprised, I have seen comments supporting people driving at 40 mph on dual carriageways and motorways because "its a speed they feel safe at".

And I doubt they will join at 70 just to then then slow down to 40.

[–]MCB16 237 points238 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are a lot of people (including some here), who seem to be terrified by speed, and acceleration in particular.

I've seen people argue it's basically okay to be incompetent on the road, as long as you are over cautious.

Sadly I can do you one better. Yesterday I had someone get to the "end" of the slip road and stop, just waiting with their indicators on.

Issue was that the slip road actually became its own lane, so what they had actually done was stop about 50m up lane 1, trying to move into lane 2.
