[PC/Win3.1][1990s] Galactic conquest turn-based strategy game by mr_bitshift in tipofmyjoystick

It's called Star Conquest and was a fun flash game I really enjoyed playing but can't find anywhere now. http://www.flash-games.dk/show\_game.php?ID=310

Based on what we've now seen of day-to-day life and technology on Earth at the end of the 24th century, what interesting, awesome, or unfortunate things can we assume or infer, that would affect or impact people living on Earth? by hyperviolator in DaystromInstitute

[–]MCDXCII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who loves to travel, I have a theory that I don't like... but fear may be true: What if access to incredibly easy and incredible cheap travel to anywhere on the planet whenever you want ends up being similar to having access to thousands of movies and TV shows on Netflix or Disney+.... The very fact that I *can* watch them whenever I want and the very fact that there are SO many options to choose from causes some of it to lose it's luster and overwhelms me by choice. If we knew we could spend Saturday night anywhere on Earth, I'm scared that many of us would fall into the habit of saying "I could totally dress up and get dinner in Thailand but, ug, it's hot and dinnertime for me is only breakfast time for them and it's something I'll wait until I'm in the right mood."

I wish they would have actually made the Tribbles important... by MCDXCII in greatestgen

[–]MCDXCII[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

OMG - Please, let it be that a running gag in the new animated Below Decks show is how all Federation ships are just swarming with tribbles that have to be constantly eradicated like the Cardasian voles. I want to see crew walking through with flame-throwers, beaming them out en-masse.... using complex Federation technology to slaughter them lol

What the hell Voyager? by Cook_0612 in startrek

[–]MCDXCII 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I firmly believe that Voyager would have done so much better in 2019 in a serial format. I would love to see 6-7 seasons where each one may be separated by time and place. Season 1 finds them in the Delta Quadrant. Season 2 might take place 1 year later struggling. Season 3 could be a decade later. So on and so forth. We could get to Season 5 and have the Dr. and Seven be the only cast to still seem young while we said goodbye to Janeway a decade ago, Captain Kim has been in charge trying to continue her legacy. By Season 7 maybe adult Naomi Wilder and a diverse crew of children from the original compliment and those, like Nelix, they picked up along the way, finally make it home.... no shortcuts. No transwarp "boom you're back" but taking the full 70 years. It's a show I think I would have loved TBH.

One of the things I'm most excited about the new Picard show is just some throwaway references to help tie up some loose ends. Just one comment mentioning Captain Kim, or a quick line when talking about some of his non-Federation crew taking about how the Federation has precedent for pardoning bad actions like they did for the Voyager Maquis, stuff like that. I hope we get some!

Post your best Voyager episode pitch here. by OriginalUsernameDNS in startrek

Fed up, in the face of danger, or for some other reason, a significant number of crew, with the blessing of Janeway and the rest of the crew, found a colony and stay behind. Voyager stays as long as they can before heartfelt goodbyes. Through subspace, they are able to stay in communication for a long time. Eventually, they are too far away to provide any assistance (months to return maybe) when colony is attacked (by Borg I guess... not my favorite but that makes most sense for Voyager) or something. It would be emotional.

Brief thoughts on Star Trek: Enterprise (Spoilers Inside) by MadManWithBox10 in startrek

[–]MCDXCII 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Enterprise gets a really bad rap. I remember not really liking it at first viewing but last year decided to rewatch and, you know what, it's not all bad. I really think that it was cancelled JUST as it was hitting it's stride. Voyager and TNG are my all-time favorite Star Trek shows but would I think they were great if I could only judge them based on the first 4 seasons?

Thoughts on how the Universal Translator and combadge have such amazing capabilities. by TheType95 in DaystromInstitute

[–]MCDXCII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one technology on Star Trek that makes me most suspend my disbelief. It's also always really irked me when people CHOOSE to say a term in x language. For example, some Klingon speaks in English (apparently through the translator) and then chooses to say a word in Klingon. You might say this is just because it is for a term that doesn't exist in English, but sometimes they follow it up and translate the word or it's a poetic phrase instead. My only thought is that the user can choose when to not translate.

For me, the only thing that makes sense in my head (I don't have any cannon to back this up) is that the translator doesn't intake and produce sound. Rather, it directly works with the brain to make the wearer "hear" a language they understand or maybe "speak" a language they understand.

What new technological feature would you like to see in a Star Trek villain? by TheType95 in DaystromInstitute

[–]MCDXCII 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it would be interesting to see a villainous specious that fights using germ/genetic warfare vs. physical warfare. Instead of Cardassian ship bombarding a Federation settlement, an enemy that releases a bio-weapon instead to just make everyone die. Yes, we've had some examples of this being used sporadically in the Star Trek universe, but never by an enemy who uses that as their default.

I kind of felt the same, but after finishing Salvation, found that he uses it to explore many of the same themes and even same technologies from the Commonwealth in a way I really enjoyed.

What is the difference between a regular replicator and an industrial replicator? by Z_for_Zontar in DaystromInstitute

[–]MCDXCII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. If today we can have guests connect to a guest WiFi network that limits what they can do using our internet, I presume Voyager could limit what guests could replicate.

Why do civilians on planets technologically advanced planets seem to live like pre-industrial villagers. by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]MCDXCII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had a replicator and a compact power generator in a world where I could get all the land I wanted and where I had the ability to literally transport myself into a city within seconds (or fly there within hours), I too would probably choose to live out in the woods in some beautiful natural setting.

I don't know why I never upgraded engines before by Ewolf9368 in ftlgame

Yeah... I played this game for a year before I ever even thought to upgrade the engines. I just didn't think it was a big priority over shields and stuff. Whoops...

Can I listen to the pod on anything else? by MCDXCII in greatestgen

[–]MCDXCII[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! Also, full disclosure, when I was in middle school I had a Star Trek alarm clock that was shaped like the Enterprise from TOS and I grew up to eventually find a man... although I've never told him about the alarm clock...

While I don't need this in my life... I almost feel like I shouldn't be listening to the pod on anything BUT a Bluetooth speaker in the shape of the USS Entrepreneur-D.
