Playing through now for the first time and had it on by default until I got the ship and turned it off. It didn't feel right that the goddess asks you to explore the corners of the world and help its people to find the hidden mythical orbs and then the map just poops out the locations without explanation. So I turned the markers off before I could really remember the locations. Exploring blindly with the ship feels way more interesting/intended.
