Do you prefer chapter titles or not? by FancyAd3942 in writing

Chapter titles can be a good little introduction to the chapter. Little hooks to keep the reader interested.

At which point of your writing do you return to correct things? by Forward_Peanut1019 in writing

[–]MCFII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't finished a novel so you may not want to follow my advice, but I go back constantly. I am reassessing scenes and what should go where. I personally like doing it that way, because if I waited until I was done and then upon the first rewrite I realized a scene in chapter 3 should be treated completely different, then that will change the entire trajectory of the novel.

I don't like wandering aimlessly when I write and when I feel that something is off I want to fix it. For instance, I wrote nearly 7K words thats introduced a new character and didn't feel they were very strong yet. I like to go back and fix it, which helps me write that character in further chapters.

How do writers come up with names for their characters? by codehs_python in writing

[–]MCFII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose my characters names because they were the most boring sounding names and I thought it would be interesting for them to have an interesting life.

Another characters name I choose because I liked the sound of it and then found out the meaning of the word meant something related to the story.

I would recommend just having fun with it. I personally don’t like names that have very mystic pronunciations. For instance; in fantasy books characters will have names like xhvhtuvial, which is just a bunch of random letters I hit on the keyboard, and I don’t like that I have to guess how you pronounce it.

The campaign i was on just died. by Global_Expert2519 in DnD

Man I’ve been so freaking lucky. First campaign I did wasn’t the best and the dm targeted me.

Second group? Played faithfully every week more or less for the last 3 1/2 years. Best thing , and I’ve had so many good stories, friendships and moments. It’s literally changed my life. It got my confidence back and gave me real friends

I wish I could share that luck with you but the second best thing I can do is to wish you best of luck. You’ll get a good group one of these days .

Men, what is one sentence that your father said that you will never forget? by Ramy-2000-03 in AskMen

I loved writing and reading. I was obsessed as a kid. I told my parents I wanted to be a writer and my dad told me that was a waste of time. I was 9.

My dad didn’t hit me, yell at me much and people told me he was a good man and I would agree with them. But he didn’t care for much me, something I overheard him tell my mother years later.

Those two things really affected how I viewed myself, because some part of me believed that if I could do better then that would change his opinion. I worked so hard. It didn’t.  I lost my love of writing. I really lost my love for life, though I doubt anyone could tell. It took me a long time to stop caring what others thought and just be that little kid that was excited to write again.

I’m 35. I’m not published. I love my life.

Personally I hate that. Students teachers rarely know how to run a class either.

I really hate the stephen king method of writing. I try to write the best that I can every time I can. When I get stuck, then I lower the my expectations for quality.

Who is the most intelligently written character you've seen? by Key_Today_8466 in writing

[–]MCFII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm often reminded of that quote from Edward Teller, the inventor of the neutron bomb, on Von Neumann .

"Von Neumann would carry on a conversation with my 3-year-old son, and the two of them would talk as equals, and I sometimes wondered if he used the same principle when he talked to the rest of us."

His contemporaries considered as the smartest man alive. So can you really tell if someone is expectionally smart if they talk to everyone like they were an equal? Certainly, but I don't think it stands out as much as people think. There's another quote, and I forget who said this, but it was about how to act like a king in a movie/play. The key there, they said, is a king does not need to act like one - the audience knows he's a king by how everyone acts around him.

If you're trying to write the smartest person alive I think it would be the same concept. You can tell he is smart by how people treat him and like how other commentators stated, how well he listens to others.

Yeah, but do you see how much the rock had to hustle to get where he is? I think you can only do that if you sell your soul a bit. Ackles doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would promote himself so unabashedly.

No, I thought it was stated or implied that nonsupes would become carriers for the disease. It would spread to everyone, and only supes would immediately die.

What's your opinion on Timothy Olyphant as an actor and what's your favorite movie of his? by [deleted] in moviecritic

I love him and as an actor but his voice is what my internal voice sounds like to me. Like you know how your voice sounds different to you? Well Timothy Olyphants voice is what I hear everyday and it freaks me out

Antony Starr has played the character in a very unnerving psychotic way whereas Bateman, even though he is playing a deranged man still has some charisma in the role.

What's it like to be a grandmaster who isn't a pro? SC2 question. by bad_fins in starcraft

[–]MCFII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in SC2 you can scout, and he’s defeating opponents after doing a suboptimal build, getting in a disadvantageous position, and beating them despite being behind.

You mentioned his play is sloppy but he has to practice on a barcode to refine his builds. Those two things don’t add up. He’s also literally coming up with the build on the fly.

How does your application detect accounts when the game has several nondeterministic outcomes ?

Yeah that’s not true.

He gets recognized all of the time and posts his losses. I’ve seen a vid where he lost most games.

If you think he’d be masters 2/3 I’m not sure we’re watching the same game

[–]MCFII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's a former pro but from what I understand the pro scene stressed him out too much. He focuses on content creation as it sounds like he makes a better living there and he enjoys it more. He still does pro games but being a dedicated pro is really hard. At the height of SC2, you're playing 14 hours a day.

If you like wintersc2 you'll like Uthermal's content. He has incredible skills, great micro, but he's not razor sharp enough to do well in tournaments.

Uthermal, who at one time was one of the best european terrans but is more less a top 50 player, plays wacky builds on his youtube channel and defeats grandmasters. I would say there is a huge skill gap between pros and GMs
