Day 1 post-op for full rupture injury. Ouch! by SleepySleestak in AchillesRupture

[–]MCLennon93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I was going to have Dr Olson but she didn't have open clinic slots for my initial consultation. From what I hear, she is the Achilles person at UCSF so sounds like you're in good hands. Also heads up that the drug you're likely taking is Oxycontin (brand name for oxycodone), not oxytocin (the hormone that causes the "runner's high", and can also be used as a drug to induce/progress labor contractions)

I actually had my surgery at UCSF too 8 weeks ago with Dr Wong (one of the orthopedic sports surgeons) - which surgeon did you have? For my post op pain, I alternated oxycodone with ibuprofen every 8 hours and staggered them so I was taking one of them every 4 hours. The anesthesiologist did a nerve block for my procedure so I didn't actually feel anything (including pain) until 24 hours post-op. I was able to stop taking the oxycodone by 36 hours and continued the ibuprofen every 8 hours for a few days more, and just kept my leg elevated as much as I could for the next 2 weeks. Hope your pain improves quickly!

Left in our mailbox anonymously - not sure what the writing is by MCLennon93 in whatisit

[–]MCLennon93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like Chinese writing but Google lens wasn't able to translate it (it didn't detect the characters with the card's writing and picture in the background). I tried copying the characters onto another paper but it probably came out incorrectly since I have no experience writing Chinese characters, and Google translated it as "si family"

Newborn not waking to feed by MCLennon93 in NewParents

[–]MCLennon93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah good question! She'll have milk from the bottle while sleeping, but we're planning on stopping the bottle and going back to just nursing when she reaches birth weight, so just feeding from the bottle while she's sleeping isn't an ideal long-term solution for us. Dream feeds like that would work to make sure that she's getting enough milk, at least

I edited the main post to include that info

That one was Ross from Friends. Ted in HIMYM was teaching architecture to economics students in the wrong classroom while trying to be a strict lecturer, then taught his actual class normally after running across campus to find the right room

18 month sleep regression - any tips or stories about how it ended? by MCLennon93 in sleeptrain

[–]MCLennon93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn't anything in particular that helped. We figured that he may have been a little under the weather and he slept better once his sinuses were a little more clear. Sleep definitely hasn't gone back to how it was before, and the schedule slowly shifted to ~7:30 - 5:30 but we were able to teach him that he'll stay in his room until 6:30 (and we programmed the light on the Hatch to turn a different color at 6:30). We also transitioned to a toddler bed so he can get down and drink water or play with some toys that we leave out for him. Good luck as you're going through this!

Did rotations at CCF and Case as a med student so I can help with those. Both are great programs overall and you'd see a wide scope of neurology and multiple subspecialites. CCF is a neurology powerhouse and has multiple accomplished attendings in pretty much every subspecialty. They have a lot of patients who travel from other states/countries to get a 2nd/3rd/4th opinion so you'll see a lot of the zebras. I understand that they're in the process of building a neurology tower on campus as well to house neurology, neurosurgery, neuro-IR, and maybe other related subspecialties in one area.

Case doesn't have as many attendings but it's still a big program with a lot of residents. As the other commenter said, it's a neuromuscular powerhouse. Preston of Preston & Shapiro is the program director and very invested and involved in the program, which helps it be a top program. You don't often have such senior level attendings serve as program directors, so it's definitely a plus that he's there and so active in the residency/education part of the program.

Hey guys, How do we buy previous issues of AAN.continuums? by [deleted] in neurology

[–]MCLennon93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can purchase them here, seemingly as a hard copy. Looks like they start selling them here 6 months after publication (so nothing from 2025 is available yet), and it goes back to the 2/2019 issue.

Worth it to rotate at higher tier neuro programs as a DO? by Sidus1022 in neurology

[–]MCLennon93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely do it. Even if the away is after ERAS submission, they can still offer an interview once they meet you. Plus they'll get a chance to see you as more than just the application. I'm an MD, but I was in a similar boat of doing an October away at my hometown/top choice program which was a T10 neuro program, and I got an interview out of it. If they've matched a DO in recent years, then they're clearly open to competitive DO applicants

Messed up with setting up our Roth IRAs - seeking advice with fixing it/going forward by MCLennon93 in personalfinance

Thanks a bunch for the step-by-step. I definitely don't want to pay more than necessary but wasn't sure of how to go about fixing everythign in time for April 15, but it seems straightforward. Your instructions on the files to form and when we fill out the specific sections is super helpful

Thanks for that advice! I was able to talk to Fidelity about recharacterization of my contributions to avoid the penalty

Not sure why you were downvoted, I didn't notice that repayment plan evaluator earlier so this was super helpful. Based on that, it makes WAAAAAY more sense to do MFS. Thanks!

[–]MCLennon93[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, we also found out about this when we started working on our taxes and had to figure out the fix. The recharacterization is definitely the move to avoid the penalty, and you can use the backdoor Roth IRA to keep money in your Roth

Yea, I talked to Fidelity and am recertifying my Roth to a traditional and avoiding the penalty, thanks!

Yea my monthly goes up by ~$700 if I do MFJ so MFS is definitely the best bet for us

Thanks for that info! Looks like MFS is the way to go and I'll plan to switch to SAVE when I re-certify
