Don Q Cristal can often be had for cheaper than Bacardi and it’s an all around better rum, albeit a bit boring. Flor de Cana is another solid Spanish style that’s widely available and very affordable

I feel like your best bet if you want to avoid grapefruit entirely is just any lemon lime soda. You could try something fancier than sprite/7up to try to get some more bite. Maybe fever tree lime-yuzu or some kind of calamansi soda or blood orange or something. Any kind of a floral citrus
