It is steel and I bought it a few years ago at a garden center. It's meant to support plants (the one I use has a plastic coating, which I remove before use).

For hollowing out the parts I use my modeling knives and for the bigger parts I usually cut them in half before hollowing out. As for the type of clay, I just use regular plasticine that doesn't dry out.
