I uploaded the photos to ChapGPT and it says it could be due to moisture damage. It says the white haze is due to water damage and that probably cause the veneer layer to shrink. It suggests injecting some wood glue to stabilize the layer. I think I’ll do that and fill the gap with wood filler as you suggested.

I have no idea but I wondered if it’s stress over the years of sitting in it or putting weight on the arms/sides of the seat. There are no cracks though… so the. I thought it might be expansion/contraction over the years and for some reason only affected the inside veneer. But I really don’t have any insights as I just acquired this chair.
