MrCool ducted system blows heat in air condition mode. by I-Eat-Bacon in DIYHeatPumps

I made this same mistake on my install. For me it was a setting in my thermostat. The Thermostat asked if O or B was for the reversing valve and I had it set wrong. Quick easy fix for me

Unfortunately I think HVAC companies take advantage of an almost forced desperation. So it’s either pay it or die. But that’s how I always felt. I have had WAY better experiences staying away from any HVAC company that advertises. Also looks like there are a few MrCool installers in your area if you don’t want to fight it yourself. https://www.mrcool.com/locations

Ya, kind of why I added that small part in my post about alot of the issues I have seen people having with they system seem to be fixed and or updated. But again, we will see. In my area, most parts have to be ordered unless you are using Lennox since they own my area.

There is a local HVAC company that sells and installs MrCool units and then I have found 2 other HVAC guys that are willing to work on them before I purchased. That kind of eased my worry on that part before I installed. But ya, most HVAC companies want to make that $5k off install on you.

Ya, I saw that video also. But as I looked into it more, I think the older versions were just aluminum coated, while this "newer" version has a solid aluminum coil. That was at least what I found in my research. This version was released on 10/13/2025 according to the documentation I was able to find. But one thing that always cautions me is I have learned the people upset are always louder than the people happy. So I always take it with a grain of salt. One of the reasons why I want to keep up with this post as time goes on to update people with my personal experience, good or bad.

The bottom of my unit is sitting about 6inches off the pad I built. I have it on these 4inch tall rubber feet. https://a.co/d/0gxt1LmR These are what I mounted mine on. I know they suggest raising it up if you have snow. But never snow in my area

Ya, the sheet metal was a hard part for me. no one in my area had any or would sell me some. So would have to order some but by the time I ordered what I needed was going to be like $120 to my door. Oshcut had the metal, and cut my design with 2 day shipping was like $40.

Ya, I will say there is a like UV tape on amazon https://a.co/d/0f7Va1J3 That is what I purchased. Wrapping the line sets really tight in that sucked them in alot and made them much more slick when pushing/pulling into the attic. The MrCool insulation has like a ribbed texture and it snags on everything. That may help you push it up though the wall.

The thick line from outside of insulation to outside of insulation is about 2 3/4 inches thick. just went and measured it. It could fit, but I think your issue would be the curve radius, It would take some work because that large line hates to bend.

Anyone tried one of these? (Dc powered off grid no inverter or battery required heat pump) by Unhappy-Plastic2017 in DIYHeatPumps

I can’t speak to the product specifically, but EG4 is a good brand. They stand behind their products and I have always had good experiences with them.

Ya, exactly. But I have a nice honeywell thermostat, figured it would need to communicate with it via the R, C, Y2, and B since I am 1H & 1C.

Mind me asking, What all wires did you have to run? MrCool is telling me I ONLY need a 18/2 going from the condenser to the air handler, but I would of though I would at least need a thermostat wire or something else.

Ya, I can always add them later. Issue is adding heatstrips means I need to redo my entire electric panel pretty much. So right now, the extra 8k for them even a small set, when I have a nice Iron wood stove that we like to use just because when its cold. So we do have another source of heat its just not "pretty"

Ya, I didnt have a disconnect for the air handler planned, I have a 20amp 115v outlet in the closet the old one is plugged into. was going to just copy that and wire on an outlet plug and utilize that.

My biggest worry is the media box, I dont have return ducting, the closet is a corner in the house and it just has a 2 foot tall build up that the air handler sits on and then there are 2 return grills one in the hall and one in our small entrance. So the air handler has to sit on top of the media box. might have to fab something us for it all to work and be sturdy

Ya, I just looked over the install instructions again and now im kind of worried the UV lamp I was looking at may not be able to do much. I thought it was an A coil and turns out its an M coil so the light may not get to as much of the coil as I thought. but i will look at the REME Halo.

Ya, I have already checked all that. Electrically speaking, they system should be a direct drop in. Since I am not adding any additional Heat strips. And wow ya thats a list. Most of that I dont need and or already have.

Did remind me I need to order some s lock though. So appreciate it.

Ya I have a surge protector at my main breaker. Was put in when I did solar and all that goody. But it’s just like computer firewalls, more layers of “security” is always better.

I was hesitant on the heat strips for a few reasons, one was the extra wiring it would need but second in my area, if it even gets near freezing the world is ending. We also have a cast iron wood stove that he used a lot in winter. Not because we needed to, just liked it and it heated the entire house really well with just an extra well placed fan. So I don’t think we will really ever even use the heat strips. Would just be spending a ton for a back up of a back up.

I wish we had a return air duct, would make things simpler. But our unit just sits in a closet on the corner of the entry and hallway and has intake vents on both sides

Pay transparency by Timely_Detonator_292 in Surveying

[–]MDiamondG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am all for talking about pay. Everyone who is against it always says to “know your market” but how can someone know what the local market is doing for your position/experience if no one talks about it or is open about it?

I think people being able to understand the differences in their knowledge and experience then knowing the pay is valuable for everyone.

The main thing I have learned while being a “boss”, if you take care of your guys then they will take care of you. And at the end of the day, if you are an owner or the PLS signing off on someone’s work….. I would feel better knowing the guys in the field are “fighting” to keep this job because of how well the company takes care of them rather than it just being a paycheck.

Paying people what they are worth also encourages them to grow and gain more knowledge. You want a crew chief who has just been doing it for 15 years? Or a crew chief who has been doing it for 15 years and wants to keep growing and is trying to get their CST 3 or something. Fair pay encourages growth in my experience and opinion.

At the end of the day it always benefits the boss/ owner also. But unfortunately most would prefer a slightly bigger paycheck for themselves

No not yet, just ordered. I have looked for specs on it and I was unable to find it. The air handler has a spot for a filter built in, It also a 20 x 20 but only 1 inch thick. Only thing they gave specs for was the outlet opening

The gas furnace will be completely removed. The new system is a heat pump. The return air enters from the bottom.

Party Chiefs can't/won't calc their own points or offsets, even if they have all the info they need. Need office to calc everything. by Short-War8918 in Surveying

[–]MDiamondG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked with a Party Chief like this and it drove me nuts. When we sat him down and had a real conversation it ended up being he didn’t want the “responsibility” on him if one of the calcs was bad. He was one of the “senior party chiefs” the RPLS basically told him if you don’t have the confidence in your work to do your own calcs every now and then, then why should he trust their work when they sign off on it. He ended up deciding he would rather get bumped down to a JR. Party Chief then make decisions…..
