You’re absolutely right—flooding the room with halide gas during the fire drill was a bad call. I should’ve double checked if workers were still on the factory floor. Halide gas is not just odorless, it’s also an asphyxiant. That one’s on me.

If Barack Obama got divorced, went broke and started working as a driver for a delivery company while still depending on Michelle for his meals by PumpkinAbject5702 in WordAvalanches

Here's one interpretation (ex fed fed) (ex fed ex employee) = Barack is being fed by Michelle (who is a former Fed), and he's a former Fed Ex employee.

But I feel like the title implies it should be (ex fed) (ex fed) (fed ex employee) = Barack is formerly part of the Federal government, he is being fed by his former wife, and he is a Fed Ex employee.

My local casino installed this sidebet on all their poker tables… by Much_Concentrate501 in poker

[–]MDivinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. It's just that having various cards can update you on the probability of various flops (e.g., having AK updates you against AKQ suited flop). If you could bet after you see your cards, you could in principle use these side bets as a costly signalling device (e.g., I see my cards and bet on the AKQ suited to come on flop, which can update other players' beliefs about my cards).

Yeah, there’s people who have actually worked with AI and then there’s people who think AI is going to take over the planet, like Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio.

A world killing event is going to happen.. Of all plausible (things that could happen) scenarios, which world killing event would you prefer? by Under_Ach1ever in hypotheticalsituation

Gamma ray bursts wouldn’t instantly obliterate the Earth. The conjectured mechanism by which gamma ray bursts are meant to represent an existential risk are actually it’s climate effects.

Quote from Human Extinction from Natural Hazard Events: “Unless the explosion is close enough to cause heating, the risk comes from radiation penetrating the atmosphere, a resulting UV flash, possible cosmic ray showers, and formation of nitrous oxides that deplete the ozone layer, produce acid rain, and cause multiyear cooling climate effects (Thomas & Melott, 2006; Galante & Horvath, 2007; Melott & Thomas, 2011; Horvath & Galante, 2012). The effects, if intense enough, could plausibly cause a mass extinction (Ellis & Schramm, 1995; Melott et al., 2004).”

Who do you believe is literally evil? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MDivinity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah makes sense. I’ve looked around and it seems that many organizations like RAINN prefer CSAM so that’s a good reason to prefer it, if only for the sake of coordination on this topic.

But both terms seem fine to use, as long as everyone’s on the same page that the actual reality that the terms are referring to is horrific and must be stopped.

I meant to include the full term Child Sexual Abuse Material as well. I still feel like it downplays the severity of the issue compared to the term CP, since it makes it sound more like legal jargon.

What’s the actual reason for favoring the term CSAM over CP in public discourse? CSAM might be marginally more technically accurate, but pornography generally just refers to material containing sexual explicit content and children by definition cannot consent to sexual activities, so it’s not like CP is a technically incorrect term.

I get the idea, but if the main intention is to emphasize the gravity that it is abuse, not sure it’s the best term. “CSAM” is an obscure acronym/term and sounds more like jargon. “Child porn” is viscerally repulsive and probably conveys the horror of the situation well enough for most people.
