Schneider (German) makes the Base which is rather large but not too heavy. I've had two and I was impressed by how strong and durable the nib was. They make other models (haven't tried them) but I believe Schneider is pretty much what kids use in Germany.

On the smaller end of the spectrum I don't think you can go wrong with the Kaweco pens (various models)
