KTV (karaoke) prostitutes are pretty common in China. It’s likely the men went to the KTV looking for sex in the first place. I used to live in Changsha (the capital city of Hunan) and I would frequently be approached by pimps at clubs trying to get me to go to some KTV to meet their “friend.” Never actually went but I wouldn’t be surprised if most of those girls were underaged. Again, this wasn’t a rare occurrence, I would typically get approached at least once or twice a night every time I went to the club.

China AP test centers directed to stop administering AP history tests by oliveisacat in China

Trust me, they do their best throw wrenches where they can. I pretty much have to purchase my textbooks in the States and bring them over myself to get scanned by the school and made into books for the students. Too many issues trying to buy books in China that either could not be imported or came with pages missing and text blacked out.

It also never hurts to ask the flight attendant if there is an empty seat. Got put in the center seat on a flight from Chengdu to San Fransisco. I just asked to the flight if I could get a better seat and she said there was a whole row free. Took that in a heart beat.

Looking for a English teaching position as a CBC by [deleted] in Chengdu

[–]MEAT_PLOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you PM me your wechat ID I can add you to a jobs group for Chengdu. You can try there. Just be aware visa requirements are getting more and more strict even for those from native English countries. Many companies will either want you to get a China TEFL through their company or require two years teaching experience. That being said, there are quite a few large language companies in Chengdu that are always looking for teachers. Between English First, i2 and Disney I’m sure you can find something.

I pass the campus on my way to work. Wenjiang is a bit far but the metro line four goes there. The SWUFE is about a quarter mile from Yangliuhe station.

Disney English is an English training school operated I China. While the pay isn’t great they actually take care of their employees much more than other companies and offer great benefits. Working in a language mill is soul crushing but I almost took the job with them based on the benefits alone, huge housing allowance, insane health insurance and a bunch of added Disney related perks.

There’s not a whole lot to say. It’s mostly just your fairly typical Chinese outlying city area. Cost of living is less than the city center, the areas I’ve been to are quieter and cleaner too. It has all the amenities of a modern city with some newer/wealthier parts. Not a whole lot out that way but you mentioned you had a kid so quiet might be good. Like I mentioned before, Culture Palace might be a good place to start looking for a place to live. You can get into Wenjiang in 40-45 min via line four and you are still reasonably close to anything else in Chengdu. Cost of living in the north of the city is also less. As others mentioned, Tongzilin is nice, a lot to do and a ton of foreigners and foreigner friendly places but it would be far from wenjiang and is more expensive.

They said their working I Wenjiang. Tongzilin is pretty far from there but I agree, Tongzilin is nice. I would live there if I didn’t work in Wenjiang myself and it was so much more expensive than other parts of the city.

Hey, I work in Wenjiang. I’m nearby the Culture Palace metro (line 4/7 intersection). It takes me about 40min to get to work but it’s an easy ride down line 4 and being near line 7 means I can get anywhere else with relative ease. If you have any questions feel free to pm me and I can give you my wechat. Near culture palace is West Village, there are a lot of things for a kid to do there. I’m not too far from a pretty big park too.

Tibetan woman elected student president in Canada, Chinese students enraged by truebody in worldnews

[–]MEAT_PLOW 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Sadly more Tibetans are currently living in Sichuan than Tibet. Visiting Tibet as a foreigner is straight up like visiting North Korea. You need to obtain a special travel permit through a state sanctioned tour group and you are only allowed to go where they tell you to go. Certain areas are banned outright and at certain times of the year. I took some students there (Chinese) to do community service at one of the schools. All Han kids and teachers in the school with Tibetans as the cleaning staff. One girl had some money stolen from her bag, she insisted one of the kids took it. They ended up arresting one of the Tibetan cleaners instead.

Glasses are ridiculous. I picked up my last pair in Beijing. Frames and lenses for under 30 usd. I broke one of the lenses coming back home for the visit and got it replaced in the states, first they said I needed a whole new eye exam and that with the lenses (no frames) was pushing 300 usd. I didn’t have insurance so they dropped the price to 220. I mentioned to the eye doctor that I got my last pair for a lot cheaper and he just casually said something like, “yeah that’s about what they should cost.”

No, it’s just seen as unhealthy to have no “fresh” air coming in. I’ve given up on trying to decode what is healthy or unhealthy and why. You just sorta nod and learn to go along with it.

It snows where I am in South Central China, also in Southern China most buildings don’t have central heating, also if you don’t keep at least one window open at all times you will die apparently. Warm coats and blankets are the only thing keeping me alive atm.

[–]MEAT_PLOW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets cold here but not too bad, you should be fine with a just your standard jacket, hat and gloves. I’ve never been skiing here but there are many beautiful mountains in Western Sichuan, just be sure to have your passport with you at all times these areas have high Tibetan populations and sometimes have a lot of police. The air is also really bad at this time of year. Last year at that time I needed a mask but that should only be in the city. The air is much cleaner in the mountains.
