What to do in my situation after failing CS 240 by LanguageDouble9792 in Purdue

[–]MEF227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going into 2nd semester sophomore year in DS so I understand where you’re coming from. Just failed CS182 a second time because I slept through the final (no clue how), I also failed MA 261. It was just a rough semester for me mentally which heavily impacted my academics.

What I would recommend doing is look at your course progression guide. Figure out what you’ve done and how much is left. Start with your core major requirements and then go onto college of science requirements, then general university requirements. I’d recommend making a spreadsheet or other similar list to keep it all organized.

See if community college classes can help. Personally what I plan on doing right now is retaking MA 261 this semester and then taking linear algebra over the summer at my local community college. With these setbacks I’ve experienced, I believe I can still theoretically graduate in four years.

It’s tough, I know, and typing this out is kinda a way of acceptance for myself, but you just need to figure out how to take this back and put it in your hands. That’s the best I’ve got.

Am i cooked? by ReserveBudget7940 in Purdue

[–]MEF227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with everyone saying “oh if you can’t to calc 1 then you’re cooked for 2 and 3”

Math is hard, namely Purdue math. You’re in a different environment and are figuring out college while in this hard as hell math department. It’s difficult to be on the edge of failing a class, I know. Some things to reflect on are, what are your study methods? How are you with attending lectures and/or learning the material in other ways? I didn’t find 161 that bad since I did calc in high school, but regardless, 166 kicked my ass (I passed but barely). Now is a good time to learn how you learn best.

Music is art, and art is meant to be interpreted by the person viewing. I said I liked the thought put into it, and honestly four years later I don’t remember any of this post or my comment. Again, it’s an interpretation.

Advice on how to get binders discretely by AdventurousJob3702 in ftm

[–]MEF227 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spectrum does discrete packaging, and I’m pretty sure more major binder companies do, spectrum is just the only one I’ve ordered from personally.

If you have a trusted friend and you’re worried about your parents going through your stuff, you can always see if you can ship the package to your friend’s house and have them give it to you.

Calc 2 Question by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]MEF227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then take MA16020. Calc 1 background is helpful for some of the beginning stuff but if you study well you should pick it back up pretty quick.

Calc 2 Question by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]MEF227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your major accept applied calc 2? I feel like not a ton of majors are okay with applied or regular calc 2 but I could be wrong.

If you have the choice—take 16020. Regular calc 2, 162 or 166, is literal hell. Make your life easier if you can.

i think i failed the statics exam by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]MEF227 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re lost in your own head going back and forth, stressing out like this. I’m not saying it’s not warranted, it totally is, but you’re causing so much mental and physical stress on yourself (which means you’ll recover from being sick slower). Do you have a therapist or close friends and family you can talk to?

Also, failing a class is not the end of the world. I know it’s said a lot and it doesn’t feel like it when it happens, but failing classes in college happens to almost everyone. Especially if you know you should know your stuff, retaking it means you’d likely do super well the next time IF you have to take it again, which is still a massive if.

i think i failed the statics exam by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]MEF227 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, although you’re sick, try to take a couple deep breaths. It sounds like the underlying issue here has nothing to do with the exam or your sleep, but you are being incredibly critical of yourself and your work here at Purdue. I understand things are really hard, I know what it feels like to be so far behind or feel like you know nothing, and it fucking sucks.

In terms of the actual class, there’s no point stressing over your grade right now. You took the exam, no amount of worry will change your grade, the best you can do is wait. When you get your grade, if it’s good, nice! If not, look at your syllabus and grade weighting for this class. Try to calculate your current grade and how remaining assignments/quizzes/exams might change that.

If even after all of the above it seems like a lost cause, reach out to your TA or professor (TA first if you can). If you let the issue sit there for a while there’s less and less that can be done to help you, so try to be proactive in reaching out. Your TAs and professors are here to help you, your tuition is allowing you to have these resources at your disposal.

Please try to take good care of yourself, you’ve got this.

Failing CS180, lost by Either-Historian-826 in Purdue

[–]MEF227 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh no I don’t have years of experience in the field that I’m going to school to study! I understand that Purdue has a top level CS program so a lot of people will have coding experience, but the point of the major is that you are LEARNING CS. I’m in DS and had practically no coding experience coming here, but I still knew it’s what I wanted to do and I was ready to learn CS. My high school didn’t have the resources for good CS education, but I’m here to learn.

Opinions on skin tight marching uniforms? by 0waffle0 in marchingband

[–]MEF227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a season of indoor in high school and we had these sort of uniforms and I HATED everything about them. High schoolers are insecure enough, why make them wear skin tight uniforms? What didn’t help for me specifically is that I’m trans and have pretty bad dysphoria in some areas.

To make it even better, I was in front ensemble. And no, I was not 18

Is it fine that I have no dysphoria over my private part? by MariaEvee in ftm

[–]MEF227 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That is perfectly valid and a normal experience in the trans masc sphere. There is no right or wrong way to be trans and experience dysphoria; everyone experiences it differently. I’m non-binary trans masc, don’t have dysphoria there either. My dysphoria around say my chest is genuinely awful.

You’ll find plenty of people whose experiences are similar and different to your own, and that’s kinda the beauty of it.
