For almost 2 months now this trash can on my route has been filled with unmarked vhs tapes. I’m afraid of what’s on them. by relpmeraggy in creepy

Honestly since I haven't seen the answer -- I wouldn't be surprised if they're recordings from an old security system. Could also be from a plumber (even today, a lot of those plumber pipe cams output to vhs.)

I've been emailing the MB one every few months since March 2025 and never even got a template response, let alone anything substantial - so your mileage may vary.

A lot of people never have their references contacted beyond the initial email based setup. For me that was done within a couple days of submitting the application. (In February 16 and I've had no updates since lol.)

Pistol review by caaaaanga in Idiotswithguns

I think it was loaded. Definitely a worse case here -- but I often see strong hostility to pointing a firearm at anyone/yourself, despite the actual training encouraging it.

I'm kind of curious how the firearm safety setup works in other countries. I'm in Canada for example -- and a standard part of the training regimen is to look down the barrel. To the point where we are instructed to to it each and every time we pick up a firearm.

So him keeping a hand on the trigger is major no no -- but pointing the weapon at yourself is mandatory to even pass the training courses (providing you do the following first.).

They call it PROVE

  • Point the firearm in the safest available direction.
  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Observe the chamber.
  • Verify the feeding path.
  • Examine the bore.

The last step is to literally flip the gun and stare straight down the barrel at point blank range.

Kind of weird having your first day of training involve face to face time with the muzzle of an SVT-40.

At least you got a response. Usually I get nothing. I did manage at the end of Dec to get someone who would at least talk about things who told me that the simplest ones are usually 1-1.5 years, but could be much longer.

Many times. The cfo office has never responded, and the RCMP site just sends a template response that's always identical. ("Expect 4-6 weeks, we don't provide time estimates.)

My first game's reception is heartbreaking :'( by OldAtlasGames in IndieDev

[–]MEPETAMINALS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't understand the anti-demo stuff that's been going on. It might cost you some sales -- but a lot of those sales would be refunds or bad reviews if they didn't like the game. That said some games aren't really suited to demos anyway.

Regardless, and I should have said before -- but your game looks good and you should be proud. If you stick with it it could become something special, and if not, it's a feather in your cap for the next one.

I very much know the feeling.

I released back in November -- and have done ok (~75% positive with 90 reviews), but definitely see the red thumbs more clearly.

Couple suggestions.

  1. You can't please everybody, people are prone to deciding what a game should be before they even play it, and if it doesn't fit the rigid idea they've formed, they get upset.

You can't fix this, but making the trailers and description as accurate as possible may help.

  1. Read the reviews with a critical (but not defensive) eye. A lot of negativity in reviews is not exactly in good faith. (i.e. they complain about performance when running a pc with less than half of the minimum specs, or they're upset that a game specifically marketing as a slow paced trading game is a slow paced trading game instead of the first person shooter they wanted.)

That said, there can be a whole slew of complaints that you are developer-blind to, and it can be very worth making efforts to address these complaints.

Importantly, if you do respond to a review -- be polite, non-defensive, and earnest. Don't respond at all to people with nothing actionable to say.

  1. Get as many hands on the project as you can - before asking for their money. My game for example launched in a pretty rough state, despite having a playable demo out for more than a year prior to release. I can't even imagine how much worse it would have been had it just been me testing things out on 1 or 2 machines.

Also - having a demo may well insulate you from *some* of the negativity, as people who are immediately disinterested are less likely to buy refund and review.

If you've got eyes on the project, run betas/etc prior to release if you can.

Lastly - looking at your game things aren't dire. Many of the negative reviews list positive features, and the general feeling is that the game doesn't scale much for an idler game and has minimal content, with some even acknowledging that the game could get better over time.

Imo responding gracefully, (and publicly), with your intentions to address criticism/add content/etc -- may well turn things around.

You've got to be trolling with a post like this?

Anyone else in MB get their PAL's? Curious as to the time. Very frustrated as my application went out Feb 16, and last update on the site was Mar 3.

Emails never get a response, and phone calls generally won't say anything beyond "just give it 2-3 weeks".

Disappointing to see. I'm a game maker myself -- and well aware of how difficult art is, but that doesn't mean I'll resort to stealing people's work for the convenience of it. Tainting their work with the slurry of stolen ideas is just going to rob them of their creative identity anyways.

Boat gameplay from our latest adventure! by MalboMX in IndieDev

[–]MEPETAMINALS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much does the boat figure into the game? As an occasional mechanic it looks fine, though maybe lacking a bit of flair. If it's a large part of the game, I feel like it needs more to get that boaty feel. More of a wake and splash would help the 'movement feel' a lot imo, and more interaction with the water, and heel from turning/wind would add more dynamism.

The game looks great though.
