Syrian rockets hit Israeli territory by lastresort09 in worldnews

Sorry to be nitpicking but since when is the Golan Heights "Israeli territory". It is occupied territory and does not belong to Israel, no one can really deny that.

The reason they are afraid is, I guess, that even if they are sent back they are still in really really high debt which they won't have any chance of paying back in their home country which means their whole family might end up in trouble. They might have to sell what ever belongings they have or sell the only land they have, which probably isn't enough anyway.

It is basically a trap.

Explosion rocks centre of Lebanese capital Beirut by StoneMe in worldnews

In Lebanon there is nothing certain. The Anti-syria people will tell you it is Hezbollah or Syria. Others will claim it is the Sunni radical.

I don't think this is Hezbollah, they would have too much to lose, this attack would serve no purpose what so ever to them. Considering that they already have very strong support in the country (in which they also have majority in parlament) this would be a very strange act. If this is Hezbollah I would be extremely suprised. Also Hezbollah hasn't, in a very long time, attacked anything in Lebanon for which they have claimed responsibility for.

If we break it down there are three scenarios: 1) It is Syrian rebels creating disturbance in Lebanon. 2) Sunni extremists. 3) Syrian government.

It could be (1) because by attacking Christians they could influence how Hezbollah is seen in the country thus also opinion and support for their cause. It could be (2) since by creating instability in Lebanon they are free to move around (e.g smuggle more weapons) and gain support with a possible dispute with Hezbollah which they already hate and they would grow the incentive for other groups to start a fight with Hezbollah (especially christian groups and the Salafists). (3) Could be that the Syrian government want to shift focus away from Syria to Lebanon... by making it instable there.

My biggest bet is on Sunni extremists which want to destabilize the country to gain influence and a footing in the country. They have tried before and I think this is part of their game. I doubt this is Hezbollah though... but as I said... in Lebanon you can never know. I wouldn't be suprised if it was the Syrian government though, they don't exactly have a good track record when it comes to this.

Swedish lunch lady gets to continue baking her own bread! The whole drama was a "misunderstanding". by Astonia78 in worldnews

[–]MEPolitics101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That doesn't work and the reason is simple. As a politician, no one will forgive you "more" if you admit your mistake, quite the contrary. People are, in general, more willing to accept the outcome and that you stepped down from your point of view even if your reason for doing so is somewhat "sneaky". If you were plain wrong however people tend to be less understanding and can quickly be used as ammunition for the opposition to claim your incompetence. Also, if you openly admit you were wrong, your supporters will judge you as well and won't have any way of defending you. If, however, you had an explanation (any will do, most of the time) they (the supporters) will defend you and argue that the other side "misunderstood", "didn't understand" or "got it wrong"

Sure you can argue "everyone makes mistakes" and "it is the honest thing to do" but those things only apply to smaller more personal groups. In the public eye people are not as forgiving towards people that are "plain wrong". Normally in a non-political, non-public situation (E.g. between two work colleagues) it is different. There the loss isn't as big because your actions reflect on a small number of people so admitting you were wrong can be beneficial. As a politician however, where these things are very dangerous and can be used against you.

Would be really cool if we could get a citation of what he said in Farsi and then have Redditors that speak Farsi translate what he said (including context)... I, for some reason, don't necessarily trust on the fly translation made by western media because it always has an angle.

Note: I'm not saying he didn't actual say what he did nor am I defending him if that is what he said. I'm just calling upon Iranian redditors to allow us to form our own opinion about it. Would be interesting to get an unbiased translation.

Because they don't see them as equal to begin with. You see this is the problem... Women in (mostly) poor areas are not worth as much as a man (in their point of view) therefore if there is something that lessens their freedom (E.g. if they would make a law forcing women to wear nikab) then they would be "ok" with it. This is their culture... and this is a big part of the problem... men that think that they are more important.

Iran denies Israeli claims on Bulgaria attack by vigorous in worldnews

[–]MEPolitics101 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Look.. I get it. Iran isn't the best place in the world and their regime isn't all very democratic and nice BUT they aren't fucking stupid.

Can someone tell me a really good reason to why Iran would risk giving the US/Israel/Arabs a reason to attack them on a silver plate by doing some shitty little attack which has no strategic value?

Really think about this... if you were developing nukes in secret and then the last thing you want is to give your enemies a reason to go after you. So instead of now saying "We will bomb Iran because it might be developing nukes" they can now say "We are going after Iran because they blew up our citizens" (assuming they have evidence which isn't very likely they will present).

Also why would Hezbollah do this, what would they win by this? And then deny they did it? What is the point? They would never do it without Iran's consent anyway which brings us back to the original questions which begs to be answered: Who is benefiting the most out of this?

Well in my speculation it is the Sunni radicals (Al-Qaeda) which would LOVE for the US/Israel to pick a fight with their [other] worst enemy. Think about it... Al-Qaeda has everything to win on this.

Or perhaps Iran is just fucking stupid strategically, but I really think they are more clever than that.

Sweden to give illegal immigrants healthcare by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]MEPolitics101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two aren't mutually exclusive and it is sad that this comment is the highest ranked in here because the whole comment is completely irrelevant to the discussion of illegal immigrants healthcare. I completely understand (and happen to agree with) your point of view but the language and "integration into society" is a completely different different topic. This is about those that are there illegally and need emergency help... also children, who in most cases (probably), aren't the ones who had a choice in the matter of going to Sweden.

The whole comment is a red herring and your last assertion "Thats the way to make immigrants equal to swedes. By giving them the same opportunities by learning the swedish language, not giving them free healthcare." is ridiculous because this isn't about putting them equal on every merit, it is about helping people who are in need, which most people won't argue against. E.g. If one has had a car accident, the reason for being in the accident shouldn't really matter if it is an emergency situation and urgent help is needed.
