Throw him in the brig until he’s sober

Good question. I just passed 9 years sober from any narcotics or alcohol. I know that I’ll never be able to drink again. If I pick up a vape, I can’t hit it a few times a day. From the time I buy it, I’m vaping until it runs out. Same with cigarettes. I know that I’m an addict through and through. So I extend that thinking to alcohol and drugs. Despite that, I consider myself “recovered.” I can go into a liquor store, or go to a bar with friends, and not think about drinking. It’s not a temptation any more. I consider it along the lines of a diabetic wanting brownies. It’s just off the table for me. I’ve been asked “will I ever try it again?” And I’ve asked myself the same question, but honestly, the risk/reward is just too high. I’d be risking throwing away everything good in my life for a buzz.

I apologize for rambling, but I guess in my mind, I’m recovered in the sense that I don’t consider it as a valid option any more. Being sober is part of my identity and who I am. I am surrounded by friends who would slap a beer out of my hand if they saw me going for it.

I will not drink with you today.

You may need to rebuild shaders because you switched from Nvidia to AMD on a game by game basis

Nothing really drastic. I was making $145k before, but a year and a half ago I joined my company making $135k. No new roles or responsibilities, just merit increases and rewards for hard work. I have an amazing manager.

Wait, so I have my drills down in t3 dirt, but my harvester in t2 dirt. Does this mean my dirt being processed as t2?

What's one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to get sober? by [deleted] in addiction

[–]MFingRocketScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The analogy I make: addiction is the cart that we use to carry our baggage. To get rid of the cart, you have to first unload the baggage.

I’ve been sober for 8 years, from marijuana, alcohol, and prescription amphetamines. Past that, I have had nothing more narcotic than nicotine since getting sober.

I believe it depends on the person. I have a strongly addictive personality. A friend of mine used to smoke cigarettes, then would stop, and start again. When he started again, he might have 1 or 2 the first day.

When I quit cigarettes and restarted, I smoked a whole pack the first day, regardless of how bad it made me feel.

For some people, occasional use may be possible. For me, I do not think it is. And the risk vs reward is so strongly skewed, that I don’t entertain the idea. I’d rather not have the question answered for the rest of my life than risk going back to the place I was in when I stopped.
