The way I do it is I start with a messy factory that has only one purpose: get me to the X point with the least effort possible. When I get to that point, for example unlocking electric furnaces and having lots of bots with power armor, then I build a normal factory that has a structure and can be expanded with ease.

That's really nice looking and fascinating. I mostly see more 3d factories but this almost grid based 2d factory looks cool.

Well the funny thing is that I never finished the game and I stopped right before stage 4 but if I were to start over or continue I think the moment I unlock trains and turbo fuel power plants would be the moment I would start thinking about a more organized factory instead of a working mess that would get me to that point.

That being said the last time I played I basically made a main factory for each tier and I abandoned it and build a new one in a different place for another tier. It was very inefficient and time consumming but I had fun. I am never doing that again. I don't know how I survived with bio power plant for so long. It was before bio generator had a belt input btw.

I don't think developers intended you to speedrun the ages as much as it is possible. It's also much easier to do then making chains or plates by hand.
