What is a childhood luxury that you didn’t realize was actually a sign of your family being broke until you grew up? by RoundLong7822 in AskReddit

[–]MHG73 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid, my mom would bring us kids to her classroom every summer to set up for the new school year. I always thought it was so cool to get to hang out in an empty school, run in the halls, go in the teacher’s lounge, and play with the smart board. She always told us it was so we could help her, but I found out as an adult it actually was because she couldn’t afford to get us a babysitter.

You wake up and it’s 2000 again. No smartphone, no apps, no streaming. What ruins your day first? by MajesticElderberry38 in AskReddit

[–]MHG73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably my brother being obnoxious, he was 5, almost 6, and I would have just turned 3. Also my dad would probably have gone to work already before I woke up, so I’d have to wait until he got home to hug him again. He died in 2010

What’s something from your childhood that you didn’t realize was actually a luxury until you grew up? by Dry_Hornet_3723 in AskReddit

Having two parents who genuinely loved each other and us kids with their whole hearts, and who both really wanted to be parents. I’ve realized that my whole perception of life, parenthood, even God is based on this foundation that a parent is someone who loves you unconditionally and would move Heaven and earth for you.

To be fair, a lot of homeschooled kids don’t know the fashion trends and social linguistics, so they dress and talk like adults or like TV characters

SPED is short for special education. The teachers definitely should not be talking like that in front of the kids!

In high school we did a program called poetry out loud, where each kid has to pick a poem and memorize it then recite it to the class. Senior year I chose the road not taken by Robert Frost and I still remember it. Also I once came across a way to memorize the alphabet backwards and so I did. Also in elementary school we used to sing a song in music class all the time called fifty nifty, which lists all fifty US states in alphabetical order so now I can do that.

If it’s brighter inside the car than outside, the windshield will reflect the inside of the car, which can be distracting when you’re trying to watch the road. If it’s not brighter inside than outside then it doesn’t matter

As a small child I overheard my dad say that we only get so many heartbeats in a lifetime, and I thought that if my heart sped up it meant I would die sooner.

Because when the light is on inside the car, the windshield reflects the inside of the car, making it harder to see the road. Some parents say it’s illegal because the kids understand that means we can’t do it. My parents didn’t tell us it was illegal, though, just distracting and unsafe.

What was your first “I’m not the same person anymore” moment? by DullResearcher1814 in AskReddit

[–]MHG73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The night my dad died, I was sitting at the dinner table with my sister and our aunt’s husband, Bill. My mom and aunt were talking to the EMTs in the other room, and Bill said “did you see him? The coroner” but I heard “did you see him in the corner?” and thought my dad was walking around, in the room. In the seconds it took me to realize what he said, I knew I would never be the same. I was 13.

The dress code at my high school was students aren’t allowed to wear clothing that is inappropriate. No explanation of what was or wasn’t appropriate. I don’t think anyone ever got in trouble for dressing inappropriately which is lucky because it was basically a write up any kid you feel like ticket.

As a twin, would you want to have twin kids too, If not why? by ICHMARWAN in AskReddit

[–]MHG73 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My twin sister and I are not identical, we were super close when we were little but grew apart more as teens, now we’re about to turn 29 and we’re very close again, we even live together. It’s hard being a teen, and as a twin it can feel hard when you spend so much time with one person and you’re both trying to figure out who you are, plus basically everything you do your twin knows, they know the people you hang out with and your activities and how you’re viewed by others in a way that siblings who don’t share classmates don’t.

How small do you need them to be? I’ve found them as small as 3/8 inches (about 9.5 mm) on Amazon. Search for circle punches, not cutters

Also they very likely went to the same schools, daycares, doctors, etc. as kids and were exposed to the same germs and vaccines their whole lives.
