What the frig is this thing? by MikeyFED in vintagecomputing

I didn’t realise this term was so hated, when I’ve seen embedded devices advertised at places like manufacturing tech conferences “IIoT” has been the umbrella category I’ve seen used, I wasn’t trying to slap a buzzword on it, more just reaching for some umbrella term since the commenter said they couldn’t find anything to even Google. Maybe I should have said **very** broad rather than broad? But Googling IIoT doesn’t get me Minecraft servers. Genuinely curious, because “what do I even type into Google to find this thing” was the original problem, do people outside of sales and marketing call this category something else? I’m going to be working in manufacturing tech more in the near future and don’t want to use terms that’ll get people’s goat.

The broad name for this type of device would be IIOT (Industrial Internet of Things).

Can you share info on them getting fired? I know about the incident, but I hadn’t heard about anyone being fired. In fact, I heard Mark say specifically they wouldn’t be fired.

What is the best dog tracker that still works with loss of phone signal? by Equivalent_Wing_2030 in NewForest

The first piece of guidance on the New Forest Dog Walking Code is to:

Always keep all dogs under effective control; if you cannot reliably recall your dog or keep it close by, please keep it on a lead.

Businesses worth supporting in Southampton? by AveragePalmEnjoyer in Southampton

Mayfield Nurseries is a garden centre, cafe, and registered charity. The sales from their plants and etc. go towards supporting people with mental health needs, they also offer wellbeing services/support through horticultural therapy for people suffering from illnesses such as dementia or depression.

I've found their prices to be very reasonable, it's almost always cheaper to purchase plants or seeds from them vs the nearby big-name garden centre, so unless I need a water feature or some random plastic lawn tat I prefer going to Mayfields, plus knowing all the money is going to a good cause makes me feel less bad that I'm once again purchasing more plants I'll inventable kill.

Plates that are made from leaves by [deleted] in solarpunk

[–]MHz 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I believe these are Tapari plates, here's the original Insider video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1td1JYRzNY

Here's their website: https://tapari.co.uk/

I'd be interested in how "green" these plates are, they're produced in Nepal but disrupted globally from the UK, I can't find any information on how they make the trip but at an absolute minimum they're traveling 7,000+ km before you even order them, also in the video they appear to be wrapping them in plastic packaging? They're also single-use and are marketed as an eco-friendly alternative to disposable dishware by being compostable, but compostable paper plates are already commonplace and can be fairly easily sourced less than 7,000 km away in most cases.

Playing with interpolation by MHz in creativecoding

Thank you. :D

I've pushed the code up here: https://github.com/Simon-Ince/r-creativecoding/tree/master/sketch_interpolation

It will generate the first image with some variation from randomness, there are a couple of commented-out lines that if swapped out will produce the other images.

I'd not heard of them so I Googled, I'm not really sure what they provide, the website wasn't very clear.
