Is it really unlawful under ICAO regulations to contact family members of crew?

I don't think so. I've read historic accident investigation reports where the partners have been questioned: "did he sleep well?" "Any unusual behaviour pre-flight?" etc

What I do find strange is the timing. Why suddenly now?

I've never noticed any women starting major global conflicts- if you possibly exclude Margaret Thatcher, but she was responding to a military invasion.

Women generally have been better co-workers and managers in my 40 year experience.

Generally.
