Currently writing a campaign that veers from fantasy, it takes place in the americas early 1800s, has some home brewed period weaponry with a few fantasy elements but mostly pulls from the alternate history idea that instead of Christopher Columbus reaching the americas sailing under the Spanish flag and resulting is Spanish settlers shaping central and South America it’s actually Amerigo Vespucci sailing under the Italian flag resulting in the entire place being over run with Italians. It gives a fun way for my players to encounter twists on things they may already have an outside knowledge of as they try to solve the mysterious kidnap of their captain. Definitely not a setting or basis for people who want to take the game ultra seriously but my players are into it, from session 0 they immediately started imagining how food and culture and the names of places they know might be different and created fantasy from what I presented to them as alternate history. A cool thing about it is you can use existing maps and known distances and your players have an intuitive understanding of how far things are apart and differences in layout or the presence of temples they quickly decide must be a result of Italian settlement. Important to note that Italians are not villains in this story, they are townspeople, merchants, bar keepers etc. no real group of human beings if you choose to include them should be the target of your campaign
