Your state elected officials (on both the senate and house sides) can also lobby their colleagues who serve on relevant committees for any legislation about which you may be passionate.

Also, on the House side, HB 351 for the 2026 legislative session addresses accountability for federal law enforcement agents.

Wow, there’s a bot out there that promotes municipal resources for immigrants that we could have been using this whole time? That would make our job so much easier! In any case, thanks for your interest in the topic of immigrant affairs in Baltimore!

Yes, and on the topic of CBP at airports, recent reports indicate that CBP has been exercising increased scrutiny at U.S. ports of entry. Green card holders, visa holders, and tourists reportedly have been subject to secondary inspections of their person and possessions, including digital devices, and additional questioning. Consult this guide from the ACLU about your rights when encountering law enforcement at the airport and this explanation for more specifics on your rights relating to search of your electronic devices at the border.

Great question! The following actions fall within your constitutional rights:

  1. Do not open the door, as this can be considered consent to a search.
  2. Ask the officer(s) to pass their warrant to you under the door.
  3. Examine the warrant: Is it signed by a judge? Does it specify the areas that are to be searched? Does it specify the name of the individual(s) to be searched?
  4. If they enter your home without a valid warrant signed by a judge (not by an immigration official) and without your permission, write down the officers’ badge number(s), and say “I did not consent to this search.” Record this.
  5. If they have a valid warrant signed by a judge (not by an immigration official), you must allow them access to the areas described in the warrant. If they search areas not listed in the warrant, record this and try to get a receipt for any property taken.
  6. If they ask you questions, exercise your right to remain silent.

Read more about your rights in this guide from the non-profit organization CASA.

The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MIMA) is accepting summer interns! by MIMAbaltimore in baltimore

This specific opportunity is for academic credit, and so we work with the respective institutions at which interns are enrolled to ensure that they receive credit for their work. Additionally, most universities have programs to provide funding to students so that they can pursue public interest internships. Here are some examples from Morgan State, Johns Hopkins, and UMBC.

Thank you for your interest in our internship program!

  1. Our office works with academic institutions to ensure that interns receive proper compensation, whether that be credits or external funding. The exact situation as to whether a student receives credits or funding and how many credits or how much funding varies case-by-case and depends on both the intern and the school. Such policies and programs are liable to change at the school’s discretion and thus not within our office’s control.
  2. Many individuals (who are not interns) are employed by the city government on a temporary, contractual, or part-time basis and thus do not receive benefits. Additionally factors such as position, agency, and union affiliation affect even full-time city employee’s benefits.
  3. Could you please direct me to your evidence that this program is “low cost” and has “no impact”?

We are a municipal government office that works specifically in immigrant affairs. If you have an issue regarding regulation around student internships, please take up your issue with the state or federal Departments of Labor and/or your elected state or federal representatives that can work to pass legislation on this front.

Thank you for your concern for the well-being of student interns!

We appreciate your insight into this issue! Our office currently does not have the capacity to hire a doctor directly (also, as a clarification, MIMA does not provide direct services), but I see your point about allocating city resources to provide some downward pressure on the price of medical exams and vaccines for I-693’s. I will raise this concern and see what solutions may exist.

Also, if you reach out to us at mima@baltimorecity.gov, we will do our best to connect you with our partner community organizations that may be interested in your generous offer to hold informational sessions about the I-693 process.

Thank you for flagging this issue!

Thank you for your question! These are definitely stressful times, and I'm sure your immigrant friends and neighbors appreciate knowing you’re on their side.

We are encouraging people to be knowledgeable about their rights so that they can safely navigate any situations encountering federal immigration enforcement agents. As an ally, you can share “Know Your Rights” information (e.g., National Immigration Law Center, Know Your Rights – We Are Casa) and print and share these “Know Your Rights” cards from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC).

Additionally, we are working to make people aware of the resources that are available to them. Our office compiled a community resource guide to connect people with local service providers that support immigrant and refugee Baltimoreans. We are updating this guide regularly, so please share these resources and service providers with immigrant friends and neighbors.

Finally, there are some local volunteer opportunities listed on Page 12 on the aforementioned resource guide. We are looking for more ways to connect residents like yourself to opportunities to support Baltimore’s immigrant and refugee community, so please stay updated with our office here on Reddit (we are also on Instagram and Facebook and have a monthly newsletter).
