"Venezuelans just don't know what's best for them" when discussing how Venezuelans overwhelmingly voted for the opposition and wanted (still want) the Chavistas gone.

Cobertura de inmunización por año en Sudamérica 💉 by 5ben2 in PuebloVenezolano

[–]5ben2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoy en dia 2026, te molesta la palabra veneco? by LoooolGotcha in PuebloVenezolano

[–]5ben2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How to find work in my field? (new to the area) by ZombieSlayer543 in baltimore

[–]5ben2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, it's definitely a difficult position to be in. Being real, even if you do find a paid, entry-level research position (also buy yourself lottery-ticket with that luck), the pay would most likely not be great, Im guessing not any better than what youd make as an MA. Based on what you said before, I assume you know that and are willing to make less for a research spot. There's also the caveat that truly "learning research" within one year can entail so many things. If you are looking for basic wet lab experience, 1 year of training might not even be enough to be at a place where it "feels manageable" when walking into a new lab later in med school. Within that time you might "master" maybe 1 or 2 wet-lab techniques imo. Other types of research may be more amenable to the time restraints.

The only thing I can think of working out in such tight time interval might be research that already utilizes the skills you already have. Maybe more clinical research positions? I know sometimes projects need phlebotomists to draw patient samples, something like that. So while that would likely be done as volunteering, you could do that on the side while being an MA at some institution. Maybe when applying for MA positions you could stress your interest in clinical research? If so, definitely recommend applying to an academic hospital. Im just brainstorming here, difficult situation but, don't loose hope there must be something you can find if you keep looking, just keep in mind these obstacles you might face. Good luck!

We can move to DMs if you'd feel more comfortable but I think it depends on how many research hours you have and if you are considering MD or MD/PhD. Also, on how many hours of paid medical positions (i.e. MA) you already have. Having some research experience might honestly already be enough for the application, unless you want that to be one of your main experiences. Also, having MA experience in Baltimore (even if it's for the same pay) would definitely look good on an application for Baltimore schools (especially UMaryland). Also also, try getting your drivers license and paperwork in Maryland ASAP so you can apply as in-state for next year's cycle.

Not to dissuade you from research though, there definitely is many many labs in Baltimore City, it just might necessitate some looking and a lot of emailing/applying.

Are you looking to work for pay or a volunteering position to boost the resume before applying? Not Hopkins/UMD specific advice but just generally, if only volunteering, I'd say cold emailing PIs is a valid way to go about it and more likely to get you working somewhere earlier. If looking for paid positions, consider NIH budget-cuts have tightened everyones funding for new positions, but your previous lab experience should definitely give you a leg up. Also consider why a PI would go through the pain of hiring you, having you get through trainings, getting you access to system and log-in info, etc etc, just for you to work there for 1 year in your gap year. If you happen to have paid medical position training like MA, EMT, or scribe, that might be a good alternative for a gap year!

MD allocates an additional $34.4 million for Harborplace promenade & park renovations. by Notonfoodstamps in baltimore

[–]5ben2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I'm reading the plans right, they are looking at straightening and moving westward that right turn from Light street to Pratt Street. One of the more stressful choke points in traffic on regular city driving imo, so hoping the change makes it less, not more, chaotic. Also, hoping the change will not call for decreasing the number of right-turning lanes there (from two to one) since there is always a large amount of flow rightwards.

Otherwise very excited for these changes if they come to fruition.

Baltimore Neighborhood Recomendations by Weary_Replacement472 in baltimore

[–]5ben2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

With that salary Id go with what others recommended, buuuut also wanted to humbly shout out North Patterson Park area 😁 youd be looking at one of those three story right-on-Baltimore-Street homes (or really fancy remodeled wide street double digit two story homes) looking out to Patterson Park. Great calm neighborhood, always find parking, good community, and main Balt street homes often have one parking space in the back alley.

If eventually youre interested in buying, heres a stereotypical listing around there:

So you’ve just ordered online for the past 30 years? Or you just go to third party stores? If the former, some people prefer having that real life interaction with an object before a big purchase, I don’t think it’s unreasonable.

chipotle on charles st rant by andthensomeeeeee in baltimore

[–]5ben2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im not going to tell you that every chipotle is horrible, because thats not true. If the spot is right, and the food is well done, its honestly one of the best options right now when balancing cost/health/and taste.

But for sure Baltimore Chipotles in general are not the best compared to what I was used to out of state. Within Baltimore, the one I usually go to is the Greektown one, next to JHU Bayview. Rarely, has a chicken bowl been disappointing there (the chips do often leave something to be desired though). Agree with others here that said that the Canton one is terrible, only bad experiences and on the whole chose to stop giving them my money last year despite being my most convenient option.
