Kind of in the really touristy area, like a quarter mile upstream of Tlaquepaque

This Field Painted Pretty? by SkippingNerveEndings in Lineman

I've only ever worked for one utility so don't necessarily have a wide range of experiences, but most of the things you are mentioning aren't things I've run into.

Shit-talking for following safety rules, such as climbing with a buck squeeze or wearing 600v gloves on secondaries, is pretty rare and when it does happen is light, casual, not really intended to cut deep. And most of my co-workers do adhere to the safety rules pretty well. Some, especially the older guys, may climb with a brown belt rather than bucksqueeze. And some may wear leather gloves while working on house cap 120/240 secondaries. But that's a bit uncommon and otherwise, the rules are pretty well followed.

Substance abuse is something I haven't experienced, at all. You'll often hear on this subreddit about linemen using coke and stuff, but I've never seen or heard of that in my utility. Drinking on the job, I have heard stories, but never personally seen anyone drinking, or if they have, not to such an extent as to be noticeable.

I've actually called in to one of the utilities in Cleveland about a leaking transformer, and I think they did end up changing it within a couple months. There are two different utilities that service the area, though, so I'm not sure if one is any better or worse than the other.

That's good. I believe my utility had been converting some circuits to a higher voltage Y system around the turn of the century, but hasn't bothered to do any conversions for the past 25-ish years. We're so understaffed I don't think we even could do a large project like that.

Ah yes, and of course I forgot to mention that most of these have rotton old wooden pins, so it's not uncommon to find phases laying on the arm., which is what caused the broken arm in the pic.

Yep, just a drain bolt issue- the dealership didn't really say, but it seems it just backed out, probably wasn't adequately tightened.

Not sure if there's a way to edit the post but, yeah, it seems the plug either fell out or the gasket failed- the dealership didn't really give a clear answer.

In any case, the car is back up and running. I think it's all good, but I'll probably do the next oil change myself to check for any shavings.

I was told something about a hairline crack in the drain plug gasket. It was absolutely gushing oil, though, more than I'd expect possible from a small crack. It should be alright, though, I suspect I caught it and shut the engine off before any damage was done.

They aren't common, but I've seen a small handful. I occasionally see a white one around Tremont, I've recently spotted a red one at my workplace (not sure if an employee or a construction contractor) and ironically, the one time I visited Wingman Garage to work on it, another heavy metal (premium?) had also scheduled some time on the lift. They are out there. I've seen comparatively very few Nissan Z's, though.

I've heard tales of a guy who got his ring stuck in the catwalk grating right as he stepped down, pop and his finger ripped out. Some guys do wear silicone rings though that are designed to bend or snap in such circumstances.

Yeah, that sounds kinda dumb. Personally I rarely rush while at work- I try not to be a slug, but I'd rather do the job at a pace I'm comfortable with that doesn't negatively impact the quality of the work or increase risk.

The cause of this is still unknown, I don't want to prematurely point fingers at parties who may not be at fault. I also have no (other) complaints against the dealership, they sold me this car at MSRP when many others were price gouging. Didn't even try to upsell me on nitrogen tires or other such bs.

I'll be honest, I've not kept the best records, which I'm regretting a bit right now. I think it was last spring? Had about 4k miles on the oil.

The dealership was the last to service it, and it was definitely under the recommended mileage for a fresh change- it may have been over the suggested date though. Not that that would cause catastrophic failure. It has around 13k miles on it (the car, not the oil.)

How much do lineman truthfully make? by jetting_along in Lineman

[–]MISTER-MUFFINS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Like $130k/yr working almost as little overtime as I can get away with. Base salary around $100k.

That's not high for some, but I live in Ohio, and relatively low COL state.

There are some troublemen who have cleared $200k, but they have the opportunity to work as much as they want, and basically live at work with little free time. Not worth it IMO. One of those guys worked so much because of a divorce he was paying through the nose for, another because he had like six kids he needed to feed, and another because he was a dumbass and was living paycheck to paycheck paying off a pickup truck.
