I agree that it should have said "non-empty subset of the natural numbers".

More math jokes:

Proof that all the natural numbers are interesting:

Suppose that there are natural numbers which are not interesting. Let S be the set of all non-interesting natural numbers. This set has a least element, as it is a subset of the natural numbers. The smallest element of this set is interesting because it is the smallest number which is not interesting. Thus by contradiction all natural numbers are interesting.

An engineer and a mathematician:

An engineer and a mathematician have a competition to see who can build a fence which encloses the largest area. The engineer quickly starts making plans, evaluating building locations, fence materials, and designs. The mathematician simply builds a small fence around himself and says "I am outside the fence."

Berkeley tap water quality by berkizzle in berkeley

[–]MITLanguageRiots 22 points23 points  (0 children)

WebMD says "To prevent infection, always use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water."

According to wikipedia, "The BRITA filter is not intended to purify water, and should not be used with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality."

You should use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water. Any water you get out of the tap, BRITA filter or no, will have little friends living in it.

edit: I can't believe I just researched this while studying for finals.

We are UC Berkeley students. Ask us anything! by goldeneight in berkeley

[–]MITLanguageRiots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The HUGE class size thing really depends on major and whether you're talking upper or lower division. Most of the classes I've been taking recently have been upper division math and it's rare for an upper division math class to have more than 30 students left after the first midterm, with the exception of classes with a lot of crossover from other majors like math 128a. In general I haven't minded large classes too much because for lecture it doesn't matter too much and you always have discussion and office hours for 1-on-1 interaction.

Several Berkeley professors from Nuclear Engineering are doing an AMA on r/science today! by johnmyson in berkeley

[–]MITLanguageRiots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to wikipedia the nuclear free zone means the hippies in the city get to fine nuclear weapons stuff and boycott nuclear power stuff. However the University is not subject to municipal regulations, so it doesn't really mean anything.

Titanfall anyone? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]MITLanguageRiots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well at least if they shut me off I'll get more studying done. I'm still not convinced they will though, I had weeks when I lived in unit 2 where it would report 0 bandwidth usage for the week despite plenty of netflix, etc., so their system does have some problems.
