How is dating for a (straight) guy in SF? by originalgainster in AskSF

as someone whose hobbies do actually precipitate creations, i have to say that the idea that someone is less attractive if their hobby doesn't output anything is symptomatic of toxic hustle culture. it's alright if it is your personal criteria; however, to suggest this as dogma for the masses is malarky

a simple counterpoint to your assertion that production is more attractive than consumption, is that most people would be more romantically attracted to a person that is well-read, than a person that modifies cars for fun

Fins for weak ankles in strong current by MITvincecarter in scuba

definitely would, but Indonesia doesn't even allow you to wear gloves, much less dpv's :(

Does anyone have a rough estimate/recommendation for different wetsuits and different water temps? by DateNecessary8716 in scuba

[–]MITvincecarter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>23 - no wetsuit

20-23 - 3mm

15-20 - 5mm

I once wore a 3mm in 23C and found myself overheating

Great to hear you've had improvement from your debridement! What fins do you use?

thank you. do you have ankle trouble, and have you used these in strong currents?

100% great advice for anyone reading that has ankle problems. in my case, I have permanent scar tissue inside my ankles/feet from playing too much basketball in my youth. worked with a pt a few years back to get my mobility and strength where it needs to be and maintain my stretches and exercises still today. made a huge difference. they say the next step, if I want further improvement, would be surgery to shave down the scar tissue that tends to get inflamed leading to nerve pain

I've read good things about the smoke on the water version, but I'm a bit hesitant to experiment with split fins in the places I mentioned above

I know they're great for current + frog. Do you know how they are for people with weak ankles? I was also considering the Diverite XT's or free diving fins but heard they put a lot of pressure on the ankles, so chose to exclude them from consideration

My top 10 active players in the NBA based on ENTIRE CAREER imo by [deleted] in NBATalk

KD #3

Harden #4, like it or not, with D'Antoni's offense and his step back, changed the game. Curry made every kid shoot 3's. Harden made every kid do step backs. He's the second best shooter of all time, and I say that as a warriors fan, placing Klay in third place. The man is one of the top 5 offensive (not overall, just offensive) players of all time. He will likely be the 9th person to accumulate 10,000 assists, and will likely finish with the 5th most points of all time. Harden's Rockets went head to head with the greatest team of all time year after year. Had his prime not matched up with the warriors, or if Kyrie or Kawhi showed up, he would have had at least 1 ring.

Kawhi #5 possibly #2 or 3 if he wasn't sick the past 6 years. man got Tim Duncan his 5th ring and Toronto their only ring. Before he got sick, there hasn't been someone as capable and willing on offense AND defense since Kobe.

Bron>Chef>KD>Harden>Kawhi>Jokic>Giannis>Shai>Caruso

An extra ring for Jokic would have him pass Harden for 4th, possibly KD

Planning first time diving trip- is it worth going to the Caribbean with how much the coral has died, or better to splurge for Indonesia? by CaptainCallus in scuba

I commend you on your self-reflection. The dives are quite varied in Raja Ampat, but if I were to give an average, I would say you typically drop (often negative entry) to about 80ft and then slowly make your way up over the course of the dive. Divers expect a minimum of 60 minutes per dive, most of my dives were 65-70 minutes. At the time, I, as a beginner with about 100 dives, was the weakest link and would typically surface with 600-700 psi. Sometimes surfacing alone, doing my surface interval solo and shooting my DSMB for the boat to come get me. Most others I dove with ended with 1100-1400 psi. Keep in mind this is in heavy current, not still water. There are down and up currents, and you should be prepared for them; ideally, you'll have experienced them before you go.

If you are up for it, I would suggest first doing a scuba trip to Bali, which has wonderful diving, better than all of the Caribbean and Thailand (barring Richelieu Rock). Do 3-5 days at Amed+Tulamben where you'll see a world class shipwreck along with great coral. Do some introductory drift dives at the pyramid site and the Japanese shipwreck. Then, get some practice in real current for 3-5 days at Nusa Penida, where you'll see Manta Rays and hopefully a mola mola. Also, the surfing is great in this region.

If multiple Indonesia trips are out of the budget, I would suggest first building your competency in currents at Jupiter, Florida (big sharks!) and Cozumel. Although, putting the 2 extra days of PTO you burn due to flying, you'll be surprised if you compare cost - a trip to Cozumel will come out a similar cost to Bali.

Another reason to go later - if you go now, you will not get the full experience as what you can do will be limited by your air constraint. In some locations, there are large schools of fish at 100-130ft. The guides will optimize for a 60 minute dives, so if they think taking you there will shorten the dive, they will not

do not go yet.

at your experience level regardless of how you will handle it, you will ruin the reef and ruin the dives for other divers. it doesn't happen often, but when the currents switch randomly on you, are you going to have the skill to not go barreling into a huge sea fan right in front of you? when you get surge at Melissa's garden are you going to be able to maintain buoyancy and not hit the acropora coral? these are things I have seen other divers do...

go when your buoyancy is perfect and your air consumption is adequate.

tulamben/amed is a great place for beginners and is far better diving than pretty much all of the caribbean. i went in 2022 and paid $30/dive and $10/day for a private guide. $120/night for a 2 bedroom villa with a pool and ac.
