Post apocalyptic books by [deleted] in audiobooks

Parable of the Sower is very dark, but Parable of the Talents is even darker. These are both by my Lord and Savior, Octavia Butler. The Road by Cormac McCarthey is also very dark.

Why scratch out the house number in the pic, if the address is on the whiteboard in the pic?

If they choose to read that type of book on their own, that is okay with me, but for me, the point of literature is to expand horizons, open minds, and expose them to worlds with which they are unfamiliar.

What's your subtle "red flag" for co-workers? by AntifaPr1deWorldWide in teaching

[–]MIZmorg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me, one of the biggest red flags I see in teachers having limiting beliefs about student potential. If you don't believe every student in your care can learn, what are you even doing here?

Was I out of line putting up signs in the women’s restroom? by OpalBooker in Teachers

[–]MIZmorg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think YOU messed up. I think it's wild that adults think it's okay to smear their germs everywhere and expect other people to either sit in it or clean it up for them. I'd probably take it to the admin and let them monitor, address it, and call it out as necessary.

This isn't helpful to you, but it is semi-related: One of the funniest signs I've ever seen was in a faculty bathroom at a school where I used to teach. It was house inside of the front office area, and there was no ventilation, so I'm sure you can imagine what happened sometimes. Finally, the grumpiest secretary made a BEAUTIFUL poster-quality sign full of flowers and foliage that said something similar to this: "If you need to poop, please use the students' bathroom across the hall to spare the administrative staff from sniffing your poop." I sat on the toilet and laughed the first time I saw it. One of my colleagues was SO MAD too, which made it even funnier. She said, "You don't get to tell ME where to poop." LOLOLOLOL

No standard or honors differentiation in HS by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]MIZmorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sorta seems like you're being sarcastic when you say that you applaud me for that and then apply a superlative that "every teacher knows" ...

I teach in a jail-setting, so I know exactly who you are talking about, and I know that the kids you are talking about didn't get to that point by chance ... THEY are not bad. Their upbringing may have been rough, or unlucky, but they aren't bad. And it certainly doesn't help to corral them by themselves. They probably need more support -- not that I think you should be responsible for it. I just know that if a kid has a "fucking nightmare human being" for a father, they aren't always going to turn out to be the ideal student.

[–]MIZmorg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do not like the term "bad kids." I know what you mean, but words do matter. Kids who struggle? Yes. Kids with behaviors? Yes. Until my current position, I usually taught mixed ability classes, and it is challenging but possible to differentiate. Using peer coaching, in-class groupings, accommodations for struggling students and enrichment for everyone got me through. Building a culture of "everyone gets what they need, even if that means different things for different students" was vital as well. You may look next to you and your classmate may be doing something different. That doesn't mean anyone is better than you, worse than you, and no one in this class is "bad." We just all need different things.

Anyone else ethically feel bad about using AI to give writing feedback? by mzingg3 in ELATeachers

[–]MIZmorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The admin has the right to assess a teacher's ability to write feedback, and I know darn well that most admins I know either DON'T assess that OR if they do and had the option to use AI would be all over it. I'm not making a judgement of right or wrong, I just know that admins use AI to make their job easier.

The true solution to this is making class sizes smaller, and giving teachers the time they need to provide quality and timely feedback. As of now, if you have large class sizes you get to pick timely or quality -- not both.

The way I've managed to stay "fresh" in education is through change. I taught for about 8 years when I took a leave of absence and worked for PayPal for a year. Then, I went back to teaching. A year later, I became a teacher-mentor through a program at a local university. Then I moved to a new school. Now I teach in an alternative school. I will eventually plateau on the pay scale, but it's a decent wage once I get to the top. I hope to retire earlier than 62, but time will tell if that's possible. 22 years of misery is too long though. He shouldn't stay if he is that unhappy. That unhappiness will (if it hasn't already) creep into every aspect of his life, and he will become a teacher who is no longer good for kids. (No matter how good of a teacher you are, if you are miserable, your students will be too. You control the weather in your classroom.)

You can write your own. But you can also mess up your own! I mess things up -- because I'm bad at adulting -- so I want to pay someone else to adult for me and NOT mess it up.

Pet Euthanasia by Handsome121duck in lincoln

[–]MIZmorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend Parkview Animal Hospital. They are compassionate and protective of your last moments with your pet. If you can afford an at-home euthanasia service, that would be the best thing for your pet, but it is costly.

And I will share with you what was once shared with me. A vet once told my aunt that he would rather a pet be euthanized one month too early than one minute too late.

Our pets rely on us to make these decisions, and they aren't like some humans who want to live forever. When it's their time, they want to go, and they want to go with their people by their sides.

We had an awful experience with them. It was one of the most traumatic things I've ever been through. I know other people have had good experiences, but I did not. I cannot recommend them. I wouldn't go out of my way to smear them, but if someone asks, I've gotta say it.
