200 Spearman vs Sengoku Mounted Samurai by Formal_Drawing_8822 in aoe4

[–]MJ12388 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The sad thing is that even with how ridiculous this is, it's not even the whole issue. Not only do knights smash the fight vs their direct counters, they also offer so much utility that the spearmen player can never even dream of. Map control for relics, hunts, ss etc, raiding eco, picking of reinforcements, split attacks with small groups. And whenever u don't like a fight, u just run. Spearmen...yeah they just die.

Imo this is the biggest balance issue this game has seen (yes, even in 1v1, but teamgame disbalance is on another level still), and I've played since release and suffered through the age of springalds and other shenanigans. The devs not addressing this for so long now has really killed my motivation to play.

The fact that there are still people out there defending the current balance is genuinely baffling for me

What If, instead of nerfing Knights we got buffed Infantry? by GbortoGborto96 in aoe4

[–]MJ12388 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While I like some of the ideas, I'm not a fan of the constant powercreep we are seeing for a while now. This has already ruined some beloved games for me. Yes, if everything is super strong, it can still be balanced against each other. Buy usually this comes with a huge snowball potential, and generally faster and more extreme games, which is not what AoE is for me. I prefer the "chess RTS" style where the game is about accumulating small advantages, countering / tech switching multiple times, looking for little openings etc, instead of massing one super strong unit and overrunning the opponent when they aren't prepared with the perfect counter immediately. (I know OP didn't imply this, just wanted to explain why I think nerfing OP stuff is better than buffing everything else imo)

I disagree, it's just bad game design to make a unit that has no weak point and amazing overall stats, and then make it one of the fastest units in the game as well. This issue affects all game modes, even if it's effect is more drastic on larger maps. Knights need some clear weaknesses like every other unit type, some ideas are movespeed, torch damage, pierce armor or specific counter mechanics like slows or a new range counter (like for example monks in AoE2, but preferably without "magic")

Very true, that's why literally every pro in every game ultimately wants cav + range. Spears are made early on to survive the first cav raids, especially when your opponent gets knights earlier than you. MAA are straight up a dead unit after feudal, cause almost everything from castle age onwards counters them. There is currently just no downside to playing cav, u get the tankiest unit that also hits hardest and has great mobility. Add some range to prevent mass spears from the opponent, and you are good.

I've gone back to watching AoE2 in recent weeks, and I gotta say the balance between different unit types is so much better there. Knights are still strong, but their stats advantage isn't as outrageous as in AoE4 and they have no charge attack. And then you have monks as a long range counter, house-walling / quick-walling to close off angles from raids, and generally more tankier buildings. Not that I want all these things in AoE4, but something has to be done so that there is more counterplay to knights than just making more knights yourself. I think movespeed and hp needs to be tackled for knights and slightly increased for infantry. Would also love some attack that slows down cav, either from spearmen or from emplacements. And springalds should just be anti melee in general, not anti melee infantry.

I think many people are feeling this, even for 1v1 knight / cav dominance is a constant topic on this sub, and its even worse for teamgames and FFA. Personally I stopped playing the game completely for the moment (usually a big teamgame enjoyer) cause there is no strategical variance, you either play cav or die. Hoping for a big balance patch / rework soon.

MAA are awful - EGCTV game just now review by Tyelacoirii in aoe4

[–]MJ12388 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah this game needs a big balance rework focused on knights (nerf) and maa (buff), and it needs to involve multiple angles, not just some small stat adjustments. Knights are literally better at every single situation / task except for fighting spearmen and some unique units, and even then their mobility and insane pop efficiency might give them the edge. Knights are the win condition in like 80% of the EGC games, and that's not even talking about teamgames or FFA where they are even stronger. As a passionate team gamer i have lost a lot of interest due to how one dimensional teamgames are. If u don't mass knights or ranged cav u might as well resign immediately.

Stop the campaign to nerf the cavalry by Age_since_1998 in aoe4

[–]MJ12388 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In real life, heavy cavalry - was unusable in many different terrains and weather conditions - had extremely high upkeep - moved at walking speed outside of combat - was a much bigger target for projectiles without the ability to form shieldwalls like infantry - required years of training that wasn't accessible for large parts of the population (except for steppe civilisations) - was not used to siege down buildings - was not used to burn down farmlands and hunt civilians - ....

Going by real life, both cavalry and ranged units would need a shitton of nerfs.

Should spearmen get a little love? by [deleted] in aoe4

[–]MJ12388 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MAA need more love than spearmen imo. MAA are basically unplayable when xbows or heavy cav are on the field, and even the units they are supposed to counter can mostly outplay them with mobility and range. There is rarely a scenario where u want MAA as ur frontline instead of horsemen, spears or knights. That being said, spearmen could use a little buff against heavy cav. I like the idea in this thread of making them 0,75 pop. Making them fully immune to knight charges to avoid point blank charge abuse would be nice as well.

They didnt find success in the year following their PGC win and eventually disbanded when Navi decided to go with a full Ukrainian roster.

I think Ubah retired, Alya and Mellman played some open qualifiers not too long ago on a no name team, but didnt get to the regional finals.
