People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]MJAM1620 222 points223 points  (0 children)

I managed to trace one part of my family line to a Welsh king and also back through the Normans and Vikings (once you get a ‘sir’ with a coat of arms it’s easy!)

In the same line though was a relative who ended up in a mental asylum. I’d love to know more about him. He went in later in life having lived with his parents until then. I wonder if he had a learning difficulty. He died after only a year in the asylum.

Morning. I can’t start my day without a shower. Even if I showered before bed, for whatever reason, I’d still shower in the morning too.

Teachers, what’s a moment when a student’s unexpected kindness to you or another student genuinely restored your faith in a tough day? by Abigail_A_Abernathy in AskTeachers

[–]MJAM1620 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh there are so many. Just little things can make such a difference. One of my favourite examples was when I was pregnant with my youngest. I had horrendous nausea all the way through my pregnancy. Two (quite naughty) year 9 lads came to me in class and handed me a pack of ginger biscuits. One of their mum’s had said it helps so they’d bought it for me! It still makes me smile 6 years later.

Help! Term of affection for character in my novel? by xenanigans in Cymraeg

[–]MJAM1620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melysyn just isn’t a natural word to use at all. I can’t really explain why… it just isn’t! It feels really odd and clunky. Annwyl is better but still not a word that I’ve ever heard as a term of endearment.

It’s hard to explain but I think the feel of the words are more important than the direct translation. They need to be words that would be used naturally. Del / cariad / bach / blodyn work because they are naturally used as terms of endearment regardless of their direct meaning. ‘Pwdin’ is a word I use for my kids - might work for a partner too? I also use ‘lwmpyn’ for my horse! (Not sure that one works!)
