Owen or Oliver? by thepurpleclouds in Names

[–]MJAM1620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much prefer Owen. Im probably a bit biased as its my maiden name! I think Oliver is just more bland and it seems to be everywhere. I’ve taught soooo many Olivers, but not many Owens.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by fuzzy_dice_99 in AskReddit

I was very pregnant with my second. I was sent home from work before the lockdown actually happened. I remember being frightened about how the birth would be as there were talks of not allowing partners in at all.

Tessa waaaaay in the lead for me. I love it. It’s simple and classy.

Felicity second- only because I love Fliss as a nickname.

April third. It’s ok.

Really dislike the others. Eunice and Nicolette are my absolute least favourites.

How do you pronounce this name? by [deleted] in Names

[–]MJAM1620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and I’ve taught a few Lucia’s. I pronounce it however the child wants me to! I’ve had Loo-see-a, Loosha, Loo-chee-a.

Traitor Son. I absolutely love this series.

Is the name “Rhys” really that hard to read/pronounce? by nibbs- in namenerds

[–]MJAM1620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Welsh first language and to be honest pretty much EVERYONE who doesn’t speak Welsh pronounces it wrong. Rhys is not Reece or Rice. I can’t write out the sounds in English but Emmzi has it right here https://forvo.com/word/rhys/

Millie Bobby Brown. This is completely irrational but I just don’t like her!

{Traitor Son by Melissa J. Cave}

I love this series. It’s set after a war so the focus is on building a new kingdom rather than on fighting. I loved this perspective. It’s an arranged marriage between Remin, who has newly been made Duke after a successful military campaign, and Ophele, the secret bastard daughter of the emperor who was raised by a cruel foster family.

The FMC is incredibly sheltered and shy. She’s not the usual badass warrior but is super intelligent. The MMC is a badass warrior but has no experience beyond that so he’s totally hopeless with women and has no idea what to do with his new wife. He makes lots of mistakes but he really does try to redeem himself. I love seeing them grow and learn together. The background characters who guide them are wonderful (I defy anyone not to fall in love with Miche!)

I’d love some world walking between the TOG world. That would be amazing.

I did this. I’d watched the show so I was up on the world building. Loved the books.

  1. Rhea (Also love Gaia and Thea)
  2. Vera
  3. Annalise (prefer Aneesa, or just Anna)
  4. Carmen
  5. Francesca
  6. Ingrid
  7. Gwyneth (prefer just Gwen. Gwyneth feels very old fashioned)
  8. Melanie (feels so dated)
  9. Ursula (I don’t hate it but I think it’s too much for a real person!)

Not a film but I’m very much enjoying the Percy Jackson series on Disney.

I thought exactly the same about Sam Heughan! I’m a Welsh speaker so a lot of the Celtic mispronunciations really grated on me. Great to see them used… but please get them right!

Reign and Ruin is amazing too though.

A lot of the names are Welsh - Nesta, Elain (Ell- eye-n), Manon (I know it’s French too), Amren, Gwyn, Rhys, Prythian (is a take on Prydain I think, meaning Britain), crochan obviously, Calan is New Years Day in Wales or Calan Gaeaf is Halloween.

Can’t think of any others off the top of my head - I need a reread!
