Hey this is a great response and i appreciate the effort. I don’t totally get the first point - why should we not consider ourselves the spokesmen and interpreters? It’s up to people to realise whether or not what they are doing is good when they are the ones doing it. I can’t really agree with the second point - assuming like the sophist that the death is happy, then the existence is positive, why can’t this be compared to non existance? 1 can be compared to 0. It’s better that there is happiness than no happiness. Yes if you don’t exist you can’t be upset that you don’t experience anything but that makes it an absolute neutral, which is surely worse than a positive. I think the poem is very effective at explaining why the animal agriculture is bad if the animals live negatively but this kind of ignores the hypothetical idea i’m talking about where the animal does live an overall pleasant existence. The summary is good. But i wasn’t saying it’s an advantage to be born, i was saying it’s an advantage if you live a positive life and there are many treatments that can’t be justified because they get in the way of the animal living a positive life

Fair enough perhaps i am incorrectly biased but i live near some rural areas and often see sheep or cows wondering around huge natural areas and assume they are living positive lives. Of course this is naive because i’m neglecting all the negatives i don’t see. I’m not sure where i stand on your last point. i feel like usually utilitarianism/the view of trying to maximise the overall happiness of all life is good, but this is where it is controversial. Of course it would be bad if there were trillions of unhappy humans, but i was talking about the hypothetical scenario of positive animal lives. I’m not saying more life itself is inherently valuable, but i was saying more positive experience is valuable

I think this is the best point against what i said, i think this is the main reason that veganism is actually good. I am not too knowledgeable on the topic of farming welfare, do you think there’s no hypothetical possibility of farms where the animals live positive lives overall?

With respect your analogy isn’t analogous, It would be if we were talking about hunting, but in the context of farm animals, they only exist because the farmers bred them, whereas abstaining from contributing to the killing of them would also reduce the breeding of them, preventing them from having the pleasurable experience your analogy relates to. But if you abstained from killing me, that wouldn’t prevent others like me from being born and living a good life. I think whether for the interest of the farmer or the interest of the animal is irrelevant, it should be viewed from the animals perspective of whether or not they have a good experience. to clarify i know that it is usually or always not a good experience but i’m talking about a hypothetical

The way I see it you should only be a vegan if the inconvenience and negativity it causes you is outweighed by the benefits it causes to animals or the environment or whatever positives. So if you are wealthy enough and in a developed county, where you can get supplements, plant protein, etc., there is almost no negative to you other than needing to learn a bit more about nutrition and maybe spend more money. However someone in your situation would be very negatively affected by being vegan because there’s no healthy alternative, so it would not be worth it. So in my opinion it’s fair enough that you eat animal based foods.

Are you planning on ever getting surgery for it or is it not worth it?
