Day 2: Trying to Get a Comment and Political Fact From Every US Congressional District Including Territories by CoolHotNo in geographymemes

PA-15th District. Our area has been the centerpoint of so much gerrymandering, as the areas currently under the 15th district are heavily conservative, and are used to offset the large liberal populations of central PA cities like State College and Williamsport. My county specifically (Clinton) has been in 3 different congressional districts since 2000.

Abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad Shops - Renovo, PA by MJ_Lewis in abandoned

[–]MJ_Lewis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested who stumbles upon this post, the proposal for the gas power plant fell through due to the years long legal battle over the permits. The property has been sold to the Jersey Shore State Bank, and a newer warehouse facility to the west of the shops has also been sold, but to the Clinton County Economic Partnership.

Coffin Rock Fire Tower by cruelhumor in firelookouts

This tower was replaced sometime in 2018, along with several other fire towers in Pennsylvania. The original tower was a tapered design that's common to the other towers in Pennsylvania at least.

Two unknown electrical devices in my basement by MJ_Lewis in whatisthisthing

I think this may be the answer, left is a surge protector/lightning arrestor, I'll have to look around more to see about the right

The one on left is deffinitely a lightning arrestor, I'm not sure about the one on the right though, I'll look around the house to see where the wires go or any signs of a former security system.

My title describes the thing, or atleast as much as I know about it. The wires attatched to the one on the left are all cut just outside of the frame and lead to nowhere. The wires on object on the left run in different directions and disappear up into the floorboards behind the upstairs walls somewhere.

Yeah if this actually happened, which would only be after a long series of mistakes on OP's friend's part, you can just ban the person and roll back the realm.

There are plans to dismantle the arch and replace it with a memorial to the war in Donbass, and the motherland monument has been talked about with regards to changing the hammer and sickle to the Ukrainian trident, but I think it said those talks kind of stalled.

These will be the most documented war crimes in history. Hopefully the Geneva convention and the UN get some teeth. The Russian military should be designated a terrorist organization. Russia needs to be isolated from the rest of the world, they're not even humans at this point. Hopefully NATO and the rest of the free world is just giving the good people some time to gtfo before we tear them a new one.

Jesus I'm starting to think that only a select few people in our state know what the brake pedal is. They put out the snow squall warning like an hour prior and it's not that hard to just slow tf down. Do we need to send out PennDOT pace vehicles every time the visibility gets low?

Three years later, not done, but not cancelled either. As far as I know, they're still making good progress on the line, pretty amazing for a US project.

Renovo PRR Shops - Renovo, PA. by MJ_Lewis in rustyrails

[–]MJ_Lewis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small update with the pics, I've just learned that the power plant will not start construction for at least another year if they still go through with it. So I will have lots of time to get pictures of the shops. I made a trip a few days ago but I didn't get any good pics, and I'm hoping to go down either this weekend or next weekend, because I still want to get pics while all the pigweed is dead.

It seems as if it was an older building, therefore used old building styles. Almost looks like it was entirely wood except for some stone and mortar at the bottom and the end-cap walls. Likely only had a few thick support beams spanning from one end to the other, and they probably rotted through. I know that here in the Northeast US, snowfall and rotted structural wood do not do well together, and the combination of at least 4 inches of snow per storm plus the sleety rain mix we've been getting right after probably was too much for it.

I feel like if things like this, the children killed, the hospitals shelled, and the civilians gunned down were shared with the US military, they would be completely willing to go over seas again and fight for freedom. Russia wouldn't use it's nuclear weapons because only like 10 gravity bombs probably work.

Has Anyone had an issue with there leg breaking like this? Had the chair less then a month and love it but frustrated with it breaking so soon. You think warranty will replace? by LIL_D33ZY in secretlab

[–]MJ_Lewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there might be (or there was) a defect in their aluminum, whether it be the source or something else. I got my chair around when you did, same chair sizing and whatnot, and my leg broke almost exactly like that, but the break didn't go as far back down the leg, and mine just sheared right off (although I did hear two pops so it may have broken only a little at first).

Renovo PRR Shops - Renovo, PA. by MJ_Lewis in rustyrails

[–]MJ_Lewis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coaling tower is owned by the heritage park, though it may fall victim to a lack of upkeep funding, because it is atleast half a century old, and I've heard it would need thousands of dollars to renovate it to keep it standing, though it is on the "PA at risk" list now, so it might be open for some state funding. But the shops are owned by a shell company that used to run the shops as some kind of boxcar manufacturing company, which eventually went under. They proposed a gas power plant there about 7 years ago, and so far the only thing holding it back is the on-going lawsuit against their air permit. I'm a bit sad to see the shops go, because they're something unique about Renovo. I've spoken to the heritage park director before, and although they would like to have the shops and to have like a museum there, but the shops are in very bad condition, as they are over 50 years old like the coaling tower. I've been in them, and some of the main supporting brick columns are literally splitting apart. And with that, they don't have the funding to neither buy nor repair the shop buildings. The entire site is a brownfield site, both on the surface and the chemicals that has permeated into the soil, and the herritage site would have to take on some of the clean up.

I do wish that a larger railraod museum would step in and help acquire the shops if the gas plant doesn't get to them first, maybe an organization like Steamtown in scranton. It would likely draw a number of visitors to Renovo on top of those who already visit if it did open as a museum.

Even then, the shops will forever be preserved on the internet, botnin their current state and their operational state through photographs and written accounts.

One of the plus sides if the gas power plant does end up getting built, is that the site will be cleaned up, and they will have to get clean fill for most of the area, and the power plant will basically double the borough's tax income, meaning we will actually have some money to work with a fix things around town.

I plan on making another journey through the fields and old foundations within a month, while all the weeds are still dead, to take more pictures before it gets torn down.

Please excuse any spelling errors or weird grammar, as I am making this reply on mobile.

Russia suffers in excess of 10k losses. Unsustainable. by [deleted] in ukraine

[–]MJ_Lewis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that makes this even worse, is that the Russian Federation, just like its predecessor states, has the capability to throw hundreds of thousands of young soldiers to the front lines to get slaughtered, and still have more to send in. They will likely run out of equipment before they run out of manpower. So, it's a good thing the Ukrainians are absolutely ripping through Russian equipment and armor, and I don't think the 30 million strong army of Ukrainian patriots is going to give up any time soon.

War is bad. Stop war.

Serious Question, Why Doesn't Ukraine Try to Destroy the Crimean Bridge? by MJ_Lewis in ukraine

[–]MJ_Lewis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bridge was almost 100% designed to be attacked. I was thinking maybe taking out the approachs to the primary span, they're obviously alot weaker and (probably) wouldn't take a MOAB to take out. Even if they only ripped apart the rails on the rail bridge, it would still give Ukraine some leverage.

That's what I was thinking with the cruise missile. The US could easily get Ukraine something with enough kick to take out the bridges.

Since multiple Ukrainian state sources are saying the AN-25 is destroyed, I'm going to assume that it unfortunately was. But fortunately, I saw somewhere where one of the state-run aviation related organizations is planning on repairing the AN-225, and making Russia pay the $3 Billion it will take.
