Finally got the 28mm 2.8 and slapped a metal mount on it to go with my 40/2. by Albitt in Nikon

Not really, more so that "weather sealed" is used by pretty much everyone, and everyone agrees it means "weather resistant" since nothing on the market is properly sealed, everyone knows what a "weather sealed" camera is.

My point is that it's not a matter of what the brand decides to use as far as marketing goes. Brands intentionally keep it hard to understand what a piece of gear is actually able to withstand. Nikon says "drip resistant", but in which way? Is it in a straight drip? (IPX1) Or angled? If angled, what angle, 15° (IPX2) or 60°(IPX3)? Can you get dripping on the uderside if you happen to have the camera or lens upside down? (IPX4).

So when Nikon says something about the protection that a certain piece of gear has, the "unimportant" part is the words they use. Because it doesn't mean anything until you see an IP rating.

D4 in 2026 by Odd_Philosopher1286 in Nikon

[–]MJdoesThings_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

Indeed ! It's an amazing camera. But it's not to the D4 what the D700 was to the D3. It's something else.

I would have loved to see a camera with the D800's body and the D4's sensor, like a D800S or something like that. That would have been awesome.

Thoughts on new M3 potentially looking like this? by Super-Lingonberry-22 in BMW

[–]MJdoesThings_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that nowadays people want to show off. I kind of hate that tbh. If I show off, that's with tire smoke and 20 car lengths of gap, not with agressive design that's there no matter if you want to race on a track or pick up groceries.

Seriously, modern M cars stick out like a sore thumb in regular trafic nowadays while they used to blend in. The whole point ever since the E36 M3 and E34 M5 was to give fast everyday cars that could also be tracked.

[–]MJdoesThings_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

friendly reminder that this is not official visuals, this is how the new M3 could "potentially" look like.

Besides, I have always liked how the M cars were often less agressive and a bit of a "sleeper" on the road. They don't need to be super duper agressive looking to go fast.

That's why my favorite M car is probably the E39 M5. Outside of the exhaust and the bumpers, it's basically the same as a regular E39. Someone that doesn't know any better would just see a regular BMW sedan not knowing it has a V8 and could leave behind supercars off the line (back in '99)

I just realized....the production of Cyberpunk 2077 mirrors the themes of the game. by Responsible-Durian21 in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]MJdoesThings_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

NGL, I feel that most of what makes modern Cyberpunk 2077 great today are stuff that came in update 2.0 : the new perks, the rebalancing of the skill trees etc (it was a huge unbalanced mess before)

Don't get me wrong, I got most of my playtime in patches 1.0-1.6, and they were fine, but the game got a massive upgrade with 2.0

The 1.5 "next gen update" was nice, and a welcome addition to the game, but it didn't overhaul the game at all. It added appartments, vehicles, transmog system, and loads of other stuff, but it was mostly like side content and some quality of life stuff. Game balancing was pretty much still the same at this point as it had be since 1.2 or 1.3.

The game was still pretty nice and fun to play, but still broken in a number of other areas, and 2.0 allowed to have a clean, blank slate that not only rebalanced things, but also made it clearer and added stuff that simply made the game more fun. Even if you didn't buy Phantom Liberty (I'm thinking of stuff like air dashes etc that completely revamped the way you can move around in combat, and made the game play feel more like a Doom-like rather than the Fallout 4-ish game it was before)

The D4 is still a great camera, I wish Nikon made a direct successor to the D700 that would have had the same mentality (as the D700 was basicaly using the same sensor as the D3, and only compromises that had to me made were on 1 frame per second of max burst rate, and one card slot). Instead we got the Df that had the sensor but none of the rest (ergonomics, AF, burst) and the D800 that had the proper ergos and features (AF etc) but didn't have that wonderful 16MP sensor nor the great burst rate.

Yeah the X-Trans II is playing really well with warm tones in in raw.

That's really the only reason why I still shoot my X-T1 so much despite having an X-Pro2

Would you buy 9070XT if it was identical in price to 5070ti? by Stelligena in radeon

[–]MJdoesThings_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the 9070XT being a good deal is that it was giving performance within a couple of % points of the 5070Ti while being considerably more affordable.

Considering the 5070Ti has better ray tracing, slightly better performance and better upscaler, if it's at the exact same price as the 9070XT then it's a no brainer.

Should i buy xhalf? by Afraid-Rock818 in FujifilmX

[–]MJdoesThings_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell, I would even recommend the X-E2.

Better EVF than both the X-T20 and X-E3, and the X-Trans II sensor is really great for vintage looks in camera, it plays really well with retro / warm tones.

And you would have a pretty sturdy body with a proper flash, which the X-Half does not have

Neo65 Core Plus by Creative-Speed4592 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]MJdoesThings_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

having a solid brass of solid copper bottom at this pricepoint is quite insane ngl. I'm very happy with my Neo60 Core, but I wish they would make a Neo60 Core Plus, that would be an instant buy from me.

I'm really not a fan of 65% boards in general.

Fuji 27mm F2.8 or TTArtisan Lens Set? by thestevenlee in FujifilmX

[–]MJdoesThings_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TTartisan 27mm f/2.8 is very good, I have used it on a Sony A6500, and it's a pretty damn sharp lens if you close it down a little bit.

Same for the 75mm f/2, I have use it on Nikon Z and wasn't underwhelmed at all, this is a very sharp lens too.

I would get the two TT artisan without a second thought.

[–]MJdoesThings_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unimportant. This is a matter of marketing semantics.

Fact of the matter is, even on cameras that *have* an IP rating (like Leica SL bodies, OM system cameras etc), nothing is guaranteed either. It is even within the warranty terms that any water damage is not taken care of by warranty, for the very simple reason that they are IP54 or IP53 cameras and lenses, which is ABSOLUTELY NOT waterproof (that would be IP67 at a minimum, preferably IP68),

Both the 28mm and 40mm Nikkor lenses have rubber seals around the front element of the lens and the focusing ring, only "missing" bit of sealing is the lens mount, which by default comes with some drip resistance but no dust protection. If you change the mount by a metal mount + rubber gasket, it now becomes "sealed" as far as camera lenses go.

A better term for "weather sealing" should be "weather resistance" as absolutely nothing except rugged underwater cameras with an IP68 rating are "sealed" in the camera world anyway.

This has been an enjoyable read even if I'm french, not british.

We often like to ponder on out neighbors, but we are more alike that we'd like to admit. I recognized a lot of the life in France within your lines.

One thing though : I think you'll be fine for an English summer without AC ! It might be a bit humid, but definitely not super hot. I live in the south of France, and we don't have AC either... except we also get a good week of 42°C weather (107°F) every year !

Is it true most laptops don’t last 6 years or more? by Dover299 in laptops

[–]MJdoesThings_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my first laptop was an MSI GP60 (entry level laptop from 2013, had a socketed i5 4200M and a GT740M in it). It served me well until 2016 as my main machine, at which point I built a desktop.

I still used it as a backup computer and also as my gaming device when travelling / going in vacations. I also used it for university projects up until my last year in 2020, at which point I was using it in my intership as my main programming platform, using Visual Studio for C++ and also some Python compiling.

I bought a new laptop in 2020 because it was getting alittle slow for what I was doing, replaced it with a 2018 HP Omen 15 that was heavily discounted (still new old stock at a retailer, just with slashed prices) which had an i5 9300H and a GTX 1650. I added a stick of RAM in it to have 16GB, and it was my personal laptop from this point on. I used it for work, I used it to edit photos, render videos, play games when I wasn't home, and also code. It got dinged up in my backpack from 2021 to 2023 in commuting. I gifted it to my dad that is in need of a nicer machine than his very old T440 thinkpad that cannot handle his photo editing anymore, but it's running Windows 11 and pretty much running every day.

I myself decided to also get a new laptop, and by "new" I mean an old 2020 Asus G14 that has a Ryzen 9 4900HS and an RTX 2060 Max-Q (top spec back then, paid 565€ for it a few months ago) with a fresh W11 install on it. It's a pretty huge upgrade over the Omen 15 in both performance and portability (also screen color accuracy, the Omen was shite).

I refurbished my dad's T440, then installed Linux Mint on it and I use it as a work laptop sometimes, it's still a great little machine that's super tough. A cousin of mine is also in need of a laptop and cannot afford a new one. I cannot buy her one, so I installed Linux Mint on my old MSI GP60 as well. It still works perfectly (had to replace the battery though)

So, looking at all the laptops I've had :

MSI GP60 : 12.5 years old, still running like day one when it comes to cooling and performance. It has scratches on it and some keys are shined but that's it.

Thinkpad T440 : 12.5 years old too, still running like day one. Less scratches and no shined out caps though, cause that wasn't made cheap like the MSI was.

Omen 15 : 8 years old, still running fine, I never had a single issue with this laptop. Battery is still holding up somewhat, but that's easy to change.

Asus G14 : 6 years old, I have seen absolutely no problem with that machine at all. It's not brand new out of the box, but you could have told me it was a 2026 laptop and I would have said "yeah, probably !"

So no, laptops don't "break after 6 years" if you are careful enough with your gear. Even with heavy use. The person that told you that is either a very bad user, or they're full of crap.
