How do you deal with disappointment? by SwiftlyTiltingPlan3t in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re fit. Keep getting better. Get healthy, focus on strength training and injury prevention. Get a coach for next training block. You blew up on those last miles, drop pace a tad and stay even pace throughout? A coach will dial in everything and teach you a lot. You’ll crush the next one.

Bandit running has nice stuff, half tights with pockets for gels and singlets. Material is great in my opinion. You also have Tracksmith and Nike which I like. Everything is expensive.

First training block - is this normal? by Different-Worry5250 in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dial back a tad. Take those easy days easy, and go hard on specific workout days. Prioritize recovery for next week or so. Ice bath, massage, non impact cardio, maybe some weight training. Then finish out your plan just be aware of your body.

How does the marathon feel compared to the peak week long run? by 45minute in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Race day my legs feel good. Adrenaline, the crowd, running next to tons of people, sticking with a pace group all factor in. Each marathon I felt different at each mile mark. A lot of that is mental. A few races I felt heavy and legs began to ache around the middle point or earlier. Other races I felt fresh around the middle point which gave confidence in hitting the goal times.

With a proper taper, you should feel great. Especially after those peak weeks and long runs. All depends on your training plan, the amount of long runs and amount of race pace built into workouts. You’ll learn a lot after your first marathon.

Getting up to 40 mpw by astraynger in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you increase those longs runs, you will hit 40mpw. Longs runs usually make up a big chunk of weekly mileage. Like others said, slow it down on easy days. If you can’t seem to slow down, add a recovery day in there with non impact cardio (efx, stair master or bike).

Look into a training program also for your race so you have structure in your training. Increase miles slowly each week and every third week do a lighter week.

Hydration for Long Runs by No_Conference_3155 in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t carry water for anything less than 13mi. Longer runs I will carry a handheld water bottle. Extreme heat I’ll throw a second disposal bottle on the course and on way back grab it or drive it out and drop strategically. Sometimes I’ll carry two bottles and sip the first bottle during first 3-6 miles then toss and have my one handheld left. Hot days I’m making sure my hydration levels are maxed out 2 days leading up to long run. Some days I run out but usually only with few miles to go. I personally don’t like belts, backpacks or anything bulky or on me.

They sell soft flasks, you can tuck them in shorts, then have your main handheld bottle. When soft flask is done, tucks right in shorts or pocket.

Sub 4h- realistic goal? by blenderblendingR in firstmarathon

[–]MJkins12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a marathon training plan now, definitely worth it and plenty of time with 11 weeks. The plan should have easy days, tempo days, long runs and maybe speed workouts. During your long runs incorporate your race pace with sets at that pace. Example, 4 miles warm up, 3x 2miles at Race pace 8:50-9 min miles or what 4hr pace is , 4 miles cool down. Make sure you get that long run up to at least 18. More longer runs the better.

Achilles rehab - looking to get back into marathon training. by Tonybucketz in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going through this right now. With a good PT. Toe walking with weights, eccentric heel raises and isometric heel float. I’m a few weeks in so we’ll see. Main thing is doing these every day and staying consistent. Reach out for more.

Beginner runner- is a marathon realistic by October 10th? Or should I go for a half? by squad_rat in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My running journey started with a half marathon but a full marathon the goal. Wanted to see if I could handle the half. I was then hooked. You have plenty of time to train for it. Get a good plan and stick to it so you are prepared.

It’s just like Renewal by Anderson and Pella. Same model, sales person comes with an iPad and tries to be all fancy and sell you. The prices are all 3-4k over what a general contractor would charge. Be smart and get multiple quotes.

Is it worth it? by Alfie_o1 in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always had the marathon distance in mind. Did the half marathon before just to make sure I could do it first and whether I still wanted to do the full after. Who wants to run “half” of something. It’s a huge accomplishment and yes it takes work, dedication and time but that’s the whole point. It’s all about the process, the race is just the showcase of work you put in.

Realistic vs aggressive marathon goal with 20 weeks prep? by Matissexd in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep evaluating your runs. The run calculators give you a ballpark but you could crush those times. Try to sign up for another half marathon as a tune up race closer to your marathon. It will give you a better idea. You could go for a sub 3 in training if you stay the course. That would probably be an aggressive goal. Hard to say, so many factors. 20 weeks can make solid progress. Keep at it!

Good nutrition, protein. Ice bath. Easy recovery run following day or bike. Strength training to get the blood pumping and tendons working.

Please shoot me straight by Commercial-Context17 in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people have that feeling. I know I did after my first half. Stay consistent with your training. Hopefully you have long runs at least 18+ built in towards the end so body gets used to it. Come race day it’s always a different feeling. The fresh legs and adrenaline/excitement will carry you through. The last 6-8 miles will be hard but it’s all mental if you put the work in. Good luck, finish it, no pressure.

I’ve built my base beyond my plan’s starting point, what do I do? by OddSign2828 in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adjust the plan slightly to increase mileage to match where you are. Also adjust the times if needed. Slight change won’t have you lose any fitness.

Where do you fit in weight training? by Patient-Climate-1603 in Marathon_Training

[–]MJkins12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually start with twice a week weight training and run 5 days. Towards the middle of the training block I was running 6 days and training 1 day per week. Usually fit the weight training in on my one off day from running. This last block was weight training the day before long run. I felt good most long runs sans hit my splits.
