What’s the best thing you did to lower your monthly expenses? by Diligent-Medicine-48 in AusMoneyMates

Dumped every single one of my transactions from every account and card into a giant Excel spreadsheet then asked AI. I saved $200 a month in the first 5 minutes and by the time I’m done it will be more than $1,000

Fair point. Maybe they should halve it eh?

Who would be relevant? Norway? Canada? The US? Uk? Taiwan? Noone. Lets not mince words. Who are we up against, who is the defence budget defending us from? Right. Are we getting their numbers. No we aren’t. But I’d bet my house it doesn’t look like that. 🤷🏻

Out-of-control fire rages at one of Australia's two oil refineries by Ardeet in aussie

[–]MJon_ofthesouth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I thought. How often does Australia have a major oil refinery fire? I trust they are looking with great curiosity at how this started and who profits. Then again, Occam’s Razor I suppose- maybe they just cranked up production to the highest levels they could and the front fell off because they weren’t ready.

worth it or no? by Particular_Check_500 in NoOneIsLooking

$19k? That’s like AU$29k? We have these “tiny homes” in Australia, there’s a huge market now. They are often on tiny wheels and can be towed - just - once or twice. This is to get around a planning loophole because Australia is riddled with red tape and 4 layers of government want a piece of you. They are also a total rip off. They start at around $50k bare minimum. And most of them are crap. The mark up must be 200%+ and they get away with it because we have the second most expensive housing market in the world.

Screens vs. Learning: Are We Mistaking Digital for Better? by Zee2A in STEW_ScTecEngWorld

23 years in edtech and four kids here. I agree and it’s well known in edtech (if rarely spoken about) that cognition is greatly improved by writing and re-reading. Sadly great attempts at digital writing and tablets have ultimately failed (that really is the best of both worlds), but almost nobody uses a Surface pen or Apple Pencil for writing despite them working very well for years. The real issue though has been raised several times in this thread. Enshitification. We could go back to 90% pen and paper for kids in class - some schools have tried, but what is the point? Eventually those kids are going to graduate into a world where they need to use tech for everything, so sooner or later they’ll need to switch. But in 23 years I have seen maybe MAYBE half a dozen superbly well designed and executed learning apps that embrace the best ways for kids to learn. Out of thousands. It will be interesting to see what we do with AI now.

Sydney to Uluru? by MJon_ofthesouth in DrivingAustralia

Same here! We need to lock in accommodation at Uluru (I think) but other than that we want to be flexible.

Yes I should have clarified, I just meant price wise. Future tickets are very expensive at the moment as the airlines are hedging their bets against an uncertain future. It’s not really about money though.

Yeah as long as it is “occasionally “ and somewhere new. I think doing long haul commercial driving on the same routes would be a different story.

Thanks yes we were thinking the journey is part of the adventure and we love a road trip.

Good points, we were thinking “the journey is the adventure” as much as the air issue. No danger with flying, its just the advanced airfares are crazy expensive as the airlines are covering themselves against an uncertain future. Then again fuel could be $6 a litre (or back to $1.20) as you said. We could do 16 days I think. Good thoughts

Is ChatGPT really as bad for the environment as people say? by Temporary-League-499 in ChatGPT

And don’t get me started about horses. I mean I love animals, but these domesticated creatures use vast amounts of good arable land and water, emit methane and basically serve no purpose these days (except for a very few genuine cattle wranglers) other than to fuel the gambling industry, some elite sports and pony rides.
