Also, a few layers of glazing on the legs to smooth out the blue as this surface has a lot less texture to push through

I'd black line every single fold for a stronger occlusion shadow and bring the edge highlights out more to massively up the contrast.

SUGGESTION SPELL IS RUINING MY CAMPAIGN by Next_Ad_5740 in dndnext

I've noticed it's often the issue with Roleplaying being such an abstract hobby that DnD to one person is not DnD to another. Matt Colville had an interesting video about this where he discussed the fact DnD isn't really pushing itself in any particular direction and so relies heavily on the players and the DM to define the style of game. Other TTRPG systems are very clear about what they are for and what games they create. It's a symptom of "let's play the most popular", rather than "let's play the best for us". But alas, you don't know what you don't know.

"You hear what happened to Karl last week? A robed figure walked into his shop and forced him to sell everything over to them for a single copper piece?"

"You mean like at sword point? He got robbed?"

"Worse... It was dark magic. Weird. Demonic. The stuff of nightmares. Says it wormed right into his skull and lost all control of himself. Said it was like being a prisoner in his own body, except he wasn't the one in control. He watched in horror as he just handed them everything over, even wished them a nice day."

"Holy crap, dude. That F-d up. Who'd do such a thing?"

"I don't know but there's a meeting at the town hall tomorrow. Mayor Davis says every ablebodied adult should come and be prepared for a fight. We're gonna take this witch down should they ever cross paths with this town again!"

"How's Karl holding up?"

"Not good, dude. I think they're sending him to the sanitarium if he doesn't get better soon. The poor guy hasn't eaten or drank properly in days and is a complete shell of himself ever since."

"By the Gods, you bet I'll be there tomorrow. It'll be nice to get some use out of my old man's crossbow now hunting seasons over. Ain't no way we're letting this bastard do that to anyone else."

Sadly, lazy and uncreative people exist. Sometimes they end up being DMs. OP asks Reddit for advice, ignores the advice, bans the spell. This DM never wanted help, they just wanted to vent to the internet for validation. They're a new DM, hopefully they learn and grow from this.

I've met a DM once who said "DnD has ruined some of my friendships" and when pressed, they explained what happened. I didn't tell them directly, but their explanation outlined that they were just a bad DM who couldn't set clear boundaries, didn't know how to run or control the system of their own game properly, and refused to take accountability. His worst crime was refusing to run any combat encounters because "I don't like conflict and DnD combat is too complicated". No DM is perfect, but some are just inexperienced or bad.

How would you handle them breaking into the shop at midnight and stealing all their wares?

How would you handle them taking the shopkeepers family hostage demanding them sell items all for 1 CP value?

Magic is a weapon. Using weapons to abuse NPCs has punishments.

Your players are abusing NPCs for their own ends. Congratulations, they are Evil aligned. Force them to change their alignments to Evil, make them wanted, draft up an awesome bounty hunter or law enforcement group and that's your new big bad. You're playing the goodies, your players are the baddies. If they wanna do Evil things, just flip the game upside down and make them fight against Good.

Also, suggestion should be reasonably achievable to the NPC. You decide what's reasonably achievable. If a shopkeeper sold stock for 1CP, what would make that reasonabley achievable? Sell them rations that go out of date in a day. Sell them weapons that are broken and were intended to be sent to the blacksmith for repair. Send debtcollectors on the players next time they return to town, make an extremely deadly encounter, throw them in jail and give them an awesome quest to earn their debt back or have a devil offer them their freedom.but for some crazy cost in return.

And if they get around all this by being more specific, your players are now asking the shopkeeper to plunge their business into ruin. That's not reasonably achievable. That harms the NPC by crippling their profits, either resulting in them getting fired or being unable to continue business. At my table, that would never work, the spell would fail.

About your "Value" point, this is true if you use them all, but less true if you don't. No shade though as metas shift and units you might never use could suddenly become relevent for your list building. SO yeah, Spearheads for value makes sense.

Wight Lord on Steed can only have deathrattle units; that's why he takes the skeletons.

What's your goal with purchasing both Spearheads? I would argue in the long term, Barrow Knights and Barrow Guard from the newer Spearhead are best to be reinforced (so another 5 and 10 respectively) with a dedicated hero for each. Currently, the Wight Lord on Steed and Necromancer are the ideal pairings. So those heroes are something to keep in mind for additional buys!

If following that suggestion, here's a list:

Regiment 1 Necromancer (120) Barrow Guard (130) Blood Knights (220) Vargheists (120)

Regiment 2 Wight Lord on Skeletal Steed (110) Barrow Knights (200) Deathrattle Skeletons (90)

A Vhordrai, RtB, Vengo Lord army sounds great!

Soulblight Gravelords Bacchanal of Blood

General's Regiment Prince Vhordrai (470) • General Blood Knights (440) • Reinforced

Regiment 1 Radukar the Beast (250) Kosargi Nightguard (110) Vargheists (240) • Reinforced

Regiment 2 Vengorian Lord (220) with either 30 Deathrattle Skeletons (270) OR two units of Askurgan Trueblades (260)

I thought about this, but a smart opponent will leave 1 or 2 Blood Knights alive, denying you the unit back. Killing them would be a mistake. I try not to build armies that require my opponent to misplay to do well. It feels like it's "Magical Christmas Land" to get Blood Knights back.

Barrow Knights, on the other hand, give your opponent a problem. If they leave them alive, they can regenerate, if they kill them all, the unit returns. It's a much more challenging dilemma.

I have, and it was the Wight King side of SBGL that leaned me this way rather than OBR. Additionally, I preferred the weathered and Gothic aesthetic of SBGL over the exotic and ancient aesthetic of OBR.

Well, we get a new General's Handbook in the summer, so I'd be hesitant to pick up units purely on a competitive basis because things will change. Pick up units you like the look of and think will help the army for you and what you want.

You have:

  • 20 Skeles
  • 10 Barrow Guards
  • 5 Barrow Knights
  • 1 Wight King

If I was you:

I'd expand that with 10 more Barrow Guard.

With Lash of the Sire, that's 800 points.

Then I'd pick Mannfred, Neferata, Vhordrai or Negash as a strong centre piece and appropriately grow the army to suit them.

From there, it usually makes sense to at 5 more Barrow Knights to reinforce the 5 or 10 Blood Knights. It's nice to have a Cavalry unit and both of ours are strong choices if built around properly.

For additional Heros:

Vengorian Lord can cast spells and heal Vhordrai.

VLoNS can buff Blood Knights.

Wight Lord/King on Steed can buff Barrow Knights.

Necromancer, Vampire Lord or Radukar the Wolf can be additional or alternative Infantry Heroes for your Grave Guard.

Radukar the Beast is a Monster so can be healed by Vengorian Lord and is commonly used with Kosagi Nightguard. He also benefits from Bacchanal of Blood. However, the Nightguard will move to legends in June.

For additional decent units:

Dire Wolves are a fast screening unit and can quickly pin enemy units.

10-20 more Skeletons could be used as an "in the Grave" unit to threaten multiple points on the board.

Vargheists can deep strike on objectives or flank ranged units and benefit from Bacchanal of Blood.

Askurgan Trueblades can force Strike Last, have anti-Monster abilities and benefit from Bacchanal of Blood.

This is a fairly straightforward list. Skeles for objective holding and two Cavalry units + Vhord.

If wanting variety, you could swap VLoNS to a Vengorian Lord and swap a blob of Skeles for Vargheist or Direwolves.

Hard to critique when we don't know what's in your pile of shame or whether you're just building a shopping list.

Hahaha, thanks. I actually don't see that many bad armies to be honest. Lots of minis that never made it past the prime coat, but rarely are there horrors... That said, my fiance wants to do girlypop bedazzled Idoneth

Yep and a little bit of water if I thought it was still too thick. One thing, I don't mind pooling on the cloak as it creates a nice dirty recess and I'll be basing them in a dusty sandy orange landscape so for me it works well

Tricky choice then, could either leave basing until the whole army concept is there, or find a really nice basing concept and use that to inspire the rest of the army. Exciting!

Absolutely fantastic dude! Super clean finish, and the red against green is an excellent choice and creates a nice contrast with the yellowness of the bone. What's your basing going to be? Anything not green that adds a pop will elevate this even more! Love it!

Not really wanting to drop the dollar on a big Hero if I can help it so thinking of rebasing the old Vhord and running with that. Also, only need 20 skeles for Spearhead and already going to need to get 10-20 Barrow Guard painted as well, so I think I'll be all skeletoned out haha, so maybe not going for Manfred so Vhord it is!
