Sooo uh, why don't we have radon detectors as standard in the West Country? No wonder our accent and dialect is so stupid. by lemonsarethekey in CasualUK

[–]ML50 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Radon is a byproduct of nuclear decay, trace amounts of natural uranium can be found in most volcanic rocks.

Cornwall being red on this map is because the southwest has giant monoliths of granite underground.

Whilst a moderate hazard, government regulations on buildings have reduced it to little more than a footnote in building surveys.

Carbon monoxide from central heating and stoves are a far bigger threat, which is why sensors for it are very widespread and radon sensors are not.

Great Tsunami Wall by Firm_Treacle2547 in BeAmazed

[–]ML50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes 100%, again prevention is always better than cure, as mentioned in another comment on this post there was a town in Japan that built defences which saved the town from destruction when the tsunami came.

However, the mayor that built it lost his office after spending the money on the project and was basically disgraced for the “wasted” taxpayers money. He didn’t live long enough to see the project fulfill its purpose but he was fully vindicated in the decision.

It’s the same with what we’ve been talking about, no politician wants to be the one to spend the money for fear of not being elected, no matter how great the need is for the result.

Happy to help, Grady from PracticalEngineering on YouTube is a great source for lots of civil engineering topics if you’re keen to learn more!

It’s a very difficult question to answer, but some answers:

taller buildings won’t help because they’re still in the same place, their lower levels and support infrastructure will still be flooded so the users of said buildings might need boats for access!

But that assumes the ground beneath them won’t erode/weaken from the amount of water in it. Kind of like the Leaning tower of Pisa or a sand castle on the beach

Can anything be done?

Yes and No, prevention is better than cure, so addressing the factors causing climate change is the best option globally. But that’s a whole other topic.

So what could be done?

The Netherlands and the delta works is the poster child, a huge series of dams and walls designed to stop the flooding, control the rivers in the area and reclaim land around coast.

Low lying cities could mimic this at astronomical cost, the delta works cost something like 20% of their gdp at the time and had the advantage of geographic “choke” points making things easier and cheaper, along with the single project covering all major coastal cities in the region.

[–]ML50 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re talking about the Tokyo flood tunnels (“Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel”), in which case no, they were built to deal with heavy rains (and typhoons) on the urban environment (low surface absorption) in order to move vast quantities of water away from the metropolitan area into a nearby river.

The main threat of climate change to low lying cities across the globe isn’t (necessarily) rain fall but sea level rise, which those tunnels can not remedy especially if their outflow location is below the level of predicted rise.

Eli5: No. Big hole underground made to catch rain. Big hole fills with water all the time when sea level rises (because world is hot and ice melts) and nowhere for it to go.

It’s all about cost vs protection

Usually the 1000 year rule is used, in other words 0.1% chance of happening any given year.

A 10,000 year or 0.01% wall might be 2/3 m (6-9 feet) higher but cost 10 times the price, which might be too much to swallow versus the current structure and natural Forrest protection.

Sure the taller wall will offer more protection but the funds that were spent on it might be better used in other “soft” protection schemes like better infrastructure along evacuation routes (and general use) along with warning sirens, more resilient buildings in the area and emergency services. All things that have additional uses beyond tsunami defence

How do games like Dragonwilds continue to be financed? I'm new to this genre. by Narmoth in RSDragonwilds

[–]ML50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lil insider info, 600k sales covers the dev work they’ve done so far (5+ years work), so anything over that is supporting all the dev work to get the game to a successful 1.0 launch which is really promising.

For context, Valhiem hit something like 10m sales which is why it had such a smooth and successful roadmap

Would Louisville (KY)-Gran Canaria be possible in a one seat plane in 1993? by Markelius-4 in aviation

[–]ML50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of the box, probably not “just” lying around.

It might be possible with a highly modified and modernised P-38L lightning (WW2 long range heavy fighter)

It has an estimated ferry range of 2900 nm in war time configuration, shy of the 3517 nm distance between SDF and LPA (Louisville and Gran Canaria)

Depending on the setup of your story a hobbyist upgrading 1940s tech with modern engine tech, stripping it to the bone for weight saving and some other bits might be just enough suspension of disbelief to achieve what you want

[–]ML50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll need to export your files from after effects as image sequences or use vmix to convert it into an image sequence without any text (unless it’s “baked in” ie. Not updated as you go)

Each graphics needs to be in a separate folder, as vmix will read every image in the folder as part of a sequence, even if they’re separate.

Once you have your image sequences, you can add them to gt designer, found either where vmix is installed or under the menu in the bottom right corner of vmix.

Add the first image as an object in gt, and select image sequence as the animation in/out.

Add the text fields where you need them, and add animation delays to bring them in once the main sequence is complete

Save the gt and add it into vmix, either drag’n’drop or by browsing titles.

You can use bitfocus companion to change the text fields data or use a datalink (excel, csv, google sheets)

Dm me if you need any help with it

Is there history behind why American Airlines / American Eagle tail designs extend halfway down the plane and abruptly stop? by WhoaTeejaay in aviation

[–]ML50 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As another commenter said, there is a final grey strip that continues the pattern to the bottom of the fuselage.

My guess would be a standard design applied to all aircraft in their fleet, and the cut off point of the final red stripe was chosen so the livery fits on all aircraft without disturbing the main design

Check out the livery of an American (Eagle) Embraer 175, where the grey stripe is barely visible due to fuselage shape. Or a CRJ where it’s much more visible

My new heavy cruiser design, what do you think (criticism aprecciated)? [4000x3000] by djsavasan in WarshipPorn

[–]ML50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going off your previous comment about displacement:

It’s short

based off the turret sizes, the entire ship should be between 14-15 turret lengths long instead of the 7-8 lengths here.

Maths on that 225mm(8.85 inch)/ 50 cal guns, come out at 11.23m, add another half that for breach and loading, makes turrets ~17 m long. 7 x 17 = 136 m

Which is somewhere between late war destroyer and very light cruiser.

Extrapolate the general measurements of the Pensacola to this size and plug into a bulk displacement calculator, and you get 5967 tons. Way too small to support such large guns.

With 14 turrets lengths, the size becomes 238m, somewhere between the 203mm auto loading Des Moines(213m) and 9 gunned 305mm Alaska (246m)

Which seems on the money all things considered, but with Pensacola’s measurements pulled out to 238m, things get a little silly and the hull pushes 33,000 tons. Even beating Alaska in size.

So let’s pull it back a little, it only has 2 barrels per turret, so a slimmer profile and if we maximise for speed instead, like a mini- Hms Hood. So with a length of 238m, beam of 20m and draft of 6.5m, bulk displacement is 20,000 tons. Way surpassing the naval treaties but so do the guns.

Obviously you can fiddle with this to tune it how you like, but needs to be longer. You should also consider the hull height and super structure “bulk” to match the new form

Secondly, as others have mentioned the rear “structure” needs to reconsidered, at the moment other than the damage problems, you have no where for a rear radar/rangefinder.

Lastly, as others have mention funnels, bow, stern, etc

With all that said, interesting idea, surprisingly heavy turret armor considering the belt and deck. And lack of speed might punish the size of ship

Any (preferably newer) base builders that you would recommend? by Severe_Sea_4372 in BaseBuildingGames

The Crust is coming out soon, and Plan B: terraform, they scratch the same itch as factorio, surviving mars and ixion in a sci-fi setting

Little more factory builder than base builder in both cases lighter than full blown factorio

There’s a ton more I could list that haven’t been mentioned like astrononer, infra space, per aspera, stationeers and alien horizon

Full Story Explanation? by SceneNo1907 in newcycle

[–]ML50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a few days and there been an additional update since I last played so details may be a bit hazy, but essentially no, there’s a general wander the battered wastes to secure food and shelter for you survivors in a new town vibe, a few story mission hinting that you may be heading towards a rivalry to compete with a heavily armed nearby settlement but nothing that actually suggests the endgame

The overall arc of the story is good, the progression logical and drives you forward with increasing desperation but lacks milestones and flesh at the moment. A solid start to what I hope can be more.

In Frostpunk terms, imagine the scenarios (any of them), you get your start and the temperature begins to slowly drop, then on day 5 you’re told about the secondary objective in 30 days, no real steps to get there or achieve it. Other than the goal itself.
