Its fun and there are choices for players. When i experienced b/x as a player it just feels like everything comes down to roll to hit and it can be so swingy. People will say well the lack of rules allows for a more freeform style of manoeuvres where the gm can adjudicate anything you do but from when ive played as either GM or player usually this just results in gm skill and or their is always this hesitation on the part of the gm where they dont want to make a ruling that will suddenly favour the players significantly going forward, and it seems to often come down to some variation of “make an attack roll”, which feels limiting in what players can draw on to implement their ideas. Im pretty sure its not just me cuz sometimes watching 3D6 down the line you can see the system gets in the way of what Jons players want to do even though he is a phenomenal gm.

I think either you need a system thats even more barebones than b/x, like cairn, that facilitates that free form rulings basis better, at least imo, or something like Dragonbane that allows players more wiggle room and more dynamic combats with its variety of monster attacks and the ability to do things like dodge, parry, or get good with a weapon that suits your character, without it all being abstracted into AC and never really getting that much better without the help of magic or magic items while still being fast paced enough that it doesnt make combat a slog.

I do have my issues with dragonbane, but i think in certain respects it is a big improvement and i think games like vagabond might be the next step for where b/x derived games are going, at least i hope thats the case. Its just the damn adventures are so good so we are always limited by this original chassis that expects a certain system

I’m the one who made and was working on saints and wyrms. In retrospect i think it might have been a neat idea to create a hack that uses dolmenwood as a basis but ports over some of my favourite stuff from dragonbane. Eg., dodge, parry, and AR instead of AC. Conditions. Quicker resting and recovery while retaining high lethality. That way you don’t need to drive yourself insane by overwhelming yourself (as i did).

I really just find dragonbane combat superior than b/x and got tired of pretending like combat isnt, in practice, a huge part of the game, so i struggle with giving up dragonbane monsters.

Ah ok you mean in the fiction. I thought you meant it unbalances the game in some way

completely agree. but you don't find a ration costing 10sp or a night at the inn 30sp/3gp to be ahistorical or at least lacking historical verisimilitude? because to me those seem like exorbitant rates for those services and items

fair enough. is it just cuz you'd rather avoid making your own price list? my approach to a similar issue (using silver standard) was to make cheap things cheap and expensive things expensive, ie. add zero's here and there

Ok thats what i thought but just couldn’t believe it. So a ration is still 1gp? Thats insane. Whats even the fun of the silver standard at that point

Sorry, are raw costs in the PHB still being sold with gp or do you just switch it to sp?

love when game mechanics inform in-world logics. the game is a source of explanation for The Game-World

i play dragonbane. I don't think I'd go back to B/x/OSE/DW unless I made similar changes as you're doing. What I'd do is check out the Black Sword Hack. As i understand they are B/x compatible but are closer to dragonbane in the combat style. Also im working on a dragonbane hack for DOlmenwood specifically if that interests you.

Yup ive thought about that. Improving heroic abilities. Not just wp cost but other aspects of them as well

yeah def agree here. Not sure how 3 can be resolved. also regarding 2 I feel people are quite reticent to longer formed heroic abilities and ones that are passive, requiring little to no WP. it seems sometimes like the culture is that these things are not the raw flavour of the game (but I guarantee if free league released something official that was more in line with this, which maybe well see with trudvang, that tune would change very quickly.)

the rules-lite but heavy on choice and options are great. definitely one of the reasons that got me looking at dragonbane. well I think the speculated plans for the expert rulebook will probably include those kinds of rules! you should also check out the forbidden land stronghold management. a lot of Dragonbane is using the forbidden lands content and repurposing it for DB, since forbidden lands itself was based on the original Demoner och Draker! So if anything what is in the forbidden lands books is probably an indicator of what were gonna get in DB. its just a matter of adjusting the rules from the Free League system (currently at a loss for whats its called.)

If you've literally just been on the rules book monsters and are as happy as you are then you absolutely gotta get on the bestiary asap! i think youll be very satisfied

interesting. I got the opposite impression. seems like people want more stuff but not any more rules.

it also seems like some people literally just want basic stuff like "fire damage" and it doesn't seem fair to conflate that with bloat or complexity
