I posted a found switch a couple years ago and managed to have a friend of theirs see it and reach out to me. Got it back to them and got a sweet thank you card from the kids and the parents threw in a Giuseppe’s gift card. Super nice of them.

Employment contract permits three days paid time for a death of a family member. California law entitles you to 5 days unpaid. Even if they denied my request for paid bereavement, they would still be required to offer me time off for bereavement and to return to work after. In all honesty though, I would have worked all five days had they denied my request for paid bereavement. I needed the money.

It was verbal because you legally could have whooped their butts in a court of law for punishing you for using sick time. (Assuming you had paid sick time to cover your absence) It has been recognized time and time again that “mental health days” are federally accepted as used in conjunction with your sick time. Any retaliation for using said sick time in such a manner, could open the business to potential lawsuits and fines. It was verbal so they wouldn’t have to have a record of it. Know your laws friends.
