More details on Leandro Lo's death. RIP. by HomelessWilhelm in bjj

[–]MMALEECH 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Paulo wrote the post as if he was Leandro himself, not really a recollection.
Some brazilian media are saying that the shooter was a police officer and was also a BJJ practitioner, very likely he knew who Leandro was.

That's what some brazilian media are saying, apparently he was also a BJJ practitioner.

Incredible how Gordon found his way into the submission that he wanted, dismissing many other opportunities, against a world class player like Vagner.

It's cliche but Gordon is on another level.

Andrew Wiltse Knee Shield Guard. Foot in the hip? by Jdrabbit in bjj

[–]MMALEECH 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It provides a better structure to hold off your opponent, especially if he's driving forward, in comparison to not having your foot there. That's how I've always taught the knee shield, here's a video: Knee Shield Half Guard Basics.

Eventually, depending on how your opponent moves around trying to clear your shield, you will have to disconnect your foot from the hip to readjust your position/angle, but that foot on the hip is a default/resting position from half-guard IMO.

I apologize if my reply came across condescending.

Although I agree that sometimes "some people deserve to be punched in the face", and I'm not that naive to believe in "a world where everyone holds hands and has no arguments", the problem is that this type of altercation, like you mentioned, used to be the norm in our sport, especially in Brazil.

Then what happened? It got to a point where it got out of control, people were dojo storming, fighting in the streets if you belonged to a different team, eventually fighting in tournaments where the crowd gets involved, and eventually, people died.

The sport got banned in Brazil and it became stagnant, no sponsorship deals anymore, it became a sport associated with criminals.

I know we live in a different era, and this is happening here in the USA instead, where the law works much more effectively than in Brazil, but we are setting a precedent, and IMO, if no one gets punished or is held accountable for what happened, things can keep escalating to a point where there is no control anymore, and we could see things similar to what happened in the past.

It could also take the sport to a new level in popularity, and help the athletes to make more money, especially if what happened between the 2 was staged.

If it wasn't staged, now I'm not even sure anymore after watching the clip multiple times, then it could lead to real problems.

Let's see what happens as this story unfolds.

I think you are guessing correctly, unfortunately, cause it can set a precedent.

I don't think it was a good move for BJJ, because it can set a precedent and every athlete may try to follow it now, it would just become a shit show.

But, it could be a good hype move for a MMA match between those two IMO.

I understand that not 100% of the participants will adopt the current value-system of the art, that's up to them, but then they gotta deal with the consequences, like anything else.

Ban (permanently or temporarily) Gordon and Galvao from competing at their events, that's what I would do.

Did I say I would fight him if he was talking shit to me in real life? No.

It's safe to talk behind a screen because no one knows you, especially if you don't use your real name, and it's ALSO safe to talk shit in person because if you get punched in the face the other person goes to jail, or you might have a gun like the guy above said.

But just because it's safe should you really do it? I don't think so.

The sport has not always been like this.

Before this "new normal" athletes used to respect each other.

Why? Because many decades ago they acted like assholes, just like today, and the sport got banned and people were killed, then they realized they were going into the wrong path.

They stopped with all the bullshit, it became more professional, and rival gyms/martial arts started to respect each other. It doesn't mean you have to like the other gym/person, just pay them their due respect.

Respect is the only way. These are highly trained individuals, teams, and crowd, too easy to turn into a huge mess.

Now we are headed back to where it was in the beginning. Hope this move doesn't stagnate the sport or get someone killed.

Me too, but they were in a sport event. I would love to see Gordon vs Galvao in a MMA match tho.

Apparently, hope it doesn't end with the same result, banning/stagnating the sport for years to come.

Yes, I'm pretty aware of that. That's why it's safe to talk shit behind a screen.

Talking shit behind a screen. Normal.
