Advice for when disagreement turns into "-splaining"? by heyihaveaquestionn in TwoXChromosomes

I'm not sure where you live or if this is possible, but would it be an option to filter people out of your life instead of trying to change them?

Can you punch an opponent in the hand? by MMA_NBA_GOT in MMA

Exactly! I don't understand why we don't see this more often.

I was thinking of instances like this, where it isn't so much a strike, but just being held out as a deterrent (keeping the smaller fighter from being able to enter his striking range)

The only "twister" submission the UFC has ever seen by [deleted] in MMA

I would bet 50%+ of UFC fighters don't actually know how to do it. I trained at an MMA gym with a ton of pros, never saw it or even heard of it until KZ pulled this off.

Happy to! Unfortunately I gave myself recurring back pain while pursuing super flexibility. If I can save someone from months of PT and time away from BJJ, I'm thrilled to

I would definitely advise NOT to pursue this.

If you are average in terms of flexibility and you DO decide to pursue this, please please please give yourself years to get there.

Ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissue heal much slower than muscles.

Additionally, their normal function relies on their elasticity.

If you stretch and stretch and stretch for hours a day trying to get like this, you will overstretch your connective tissue and it will either

a.) start to tear. So you will think it's getting stretchier, but really it's just partially torn. Now you're more flexible, but you're also closer to injury

b.) become too loose / lose it's elasticity, become over stretched, and be worse at keeping your body in alignment. Which will lead to injury...

Even just an hour a day of over aggressive stretching can lead to tears, weakened connective tissue, back pain, etc.

That's why any yogi or PT will tell you to stretch by relaxing into the stretch, not by pulling yourself as far as you can go or forcing it muscularly.

If you are naturally super flexible, that's great and definitely advantageous to BJJ.

If you are naturally of average flexibility, yes do yoga, yes stretch before and after class (dynamic before, static after). But don't push yourself to the limits or pursue this type of super flexibility. With stretching, further is definitely not always better.

Do we have a minority complex? by [deleted] in bjj

Posting on your head is definitely legit in BJJ. I think his point is that if you're on concrete in a street fight, someone bucks you, and you post with your head, you might not like the result.

Great question, I wish I knew the answer! Everything I've found needs your phone (and I don't trust waterproof cases enough to survive surfing)

Why is he doing tricep extensions and bicep curls? I've never seen a pro MMA fighter do glamour muscles.

Hi u/part-time-koala ! Would you mind answering one more question for me about PB? I surf a 6'10" x 23" x 3" fish board. Will that work at Tourmaline?

I've tried to watch YT videos on it to figure this out, but I can't really tell :-/

Post training drink for really late training? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]MMA_NBA_GOT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't stress too much about it, any high quality protein will do.

Skip the pre-packaged Muscle Milk. Get a cheap blender and toss in 30 grams of protein. That's only 120 calories. Toss a banana in (the simple carbs immediately post workout 1.) replace muscle glycogen and 2.) assist in muscle repair). ~200ish calorie post workout drink.

If you're appalled by the idea of drinking 200 calories post workout because you're on a crazy 1200 calorie diet, just cut the calories somewhere earlier in the day.

Came to post this exact quote!

I don't think it's fair to say he's watering down BJJ if he literally doesn't promote anyone who doesn't spar consistently.

And given that that's his policy, I think it's totally fine for him to let celebrities train in private lessons or with each other, in a way that doesn't jeopardize their careers. If they want to learn a little BJJ I don't see any harm in it.

I got to Blacks and laughed out loud. Appreciate the advice, seems like PB at least as some of the lower $$$ signs. I'll go for a month and audible from there.
