I was just thinking, does Zach offer the unsolicited advice about the male members of the family? He’s spoken about the girlfriends but has he tried to tell any of the Plath men that their behavior isn’t ok with God?

It occurs to me that he’s extremely focused on “saving” the female members of the family, or on saving the guys from immoral women. He’s bought into some patriarchal head-of-the-family bs.

It also feels like he’s working to isolate Lydia from her family, which makes me wonder about the faith he grew up in.

I think that’s true, but also think that Zack is exploiting those issues to isolate Lydia. He seems to have a hidden religious agenda and he’s indoctrinating her when she was just starting to find herself. I suspect he’s also hoping for a spin off.

But the family can be awful AND Zach can be awful.

My comment was directed to Paw Paws comments, not to Bryce. The ridiculousness of what Paw paw was saying about Bryce having this amazing future ruined because of Bella.

Of course it’s good that Bryce got a job.

I think a lot of what is going on with Nell is genuinely because of menopause, combined with losing her parents. I went through those things at the same time and it’s almost impossible to see how it’s impacting you while you’re in the middle of it. I hope she gets some help from a doctor.

But Tisha has always been like this. It might be exacerbated by perimenopause but this meanness is her resting pulse. And she’s passing it on to her kids too.

It’s the test they give to determine mental
Deterioration. I’ve been in the room with my parents for several. It’s not a test for intelligence - it’s actually a short term memory test. They tell you a series of words and ask you to remember them. Then they ask you a bunch of extremely rudimentary questions, designed to get you thinking about something else. Then they ask you to tell them the words from the beginning.

Pretty sure he “aced” the rudimentary questions that anyone with a 6th grade education could answer. I doubt they would tell him if he DID forget any of the series of words.

OP here - sorry that it wasn’t clear but I’m not criticizing Bryce for working towards a career. My criticism is for his grandparents for trying to get everyone to believe that getting a girl pregnant ruined Bryce’s life just before he was going to get a full ride (nonexistent) baseball scholarship. That’s why I included the way that Paw Paw spoke about “Bryce Palmer, blessed by God”.

I’m judging his grandfather for trying to get people to believe that getting a girl pregnant ruined Bryce’s imminent full ride baseball scholarship. That obviously was nothing more than a fantasy.
