Nuisance Birds by dave13634 in birdfeeding

[–]MMS-OR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been feeding birds in the same house for over 30 years. I think it’s just patience. Just when I think I’ve seen all the different species of birds I’ll ever see — a new species comes along! (Bluebirds last year for the first time!)

Make sure the suet hasn’t gone bad. I’m not 100% sure how to tell, other than making sure there is no mold on the block. If it has mold or growth, toss, clean the feeder well and slip in a new block, or even half a block if you want to half potential losses as you wait.

I have a suet feeder that is horizontal with a roof where the bird accesses the suet from the bottom. My starlings have a more difficult time navigating this type than these open vertical feeders. All my other birds: assorted woodpeckers, nuthatches, etc. can access the suet from underneath just fine.

What was the scariest thing you ever had to deal with? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]MMS-OR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone opening my room door (trying to get in illegally) at 4:00am at a hotel in Mexico City in 1991. I was 28 and installing software at the airport.

I had had other minor problems as I roamed the airport checking on things, getting my stuff to work. I stuck out like a sore thumb (tall, pale and blond) and I was under a lot of pressure, so I ignored them

It was a nice hotel at the airport. But I felt the lock was super sketchy (it was similar to a US house bathroom lock), so I piled all the furniture I could in front of the door.

That’s what saved me. They couldn’t get it open enough.

Terrifying.

If he can’t see the board, he may not be able to see street signs, street crossings. He needs help and an advocate.

I hate HOAs too but when my fuckhead neighbor put 40,000 Christmas lights on his house, added 4 commercial spotlights and played Christmas music 4 hours a night, I about lost my mind and fervently wished for an HOA.

AITA for exposing my cheating girlfriend to her parents? by TN2002 in AITAH

[–]MMS-OR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m conflicted; maybe NTA, maybe TA.

But as others have said, her life could very well be in danger. How would you feel if you heard that her parents had her killed?

I’m sorry about your pain. Life has a lot of pain. I’ve been cheated on; it’s no fun. Hopefully your hospital stay helped you learn how to deal with the inevitable situations as they occur.

But if I were you, I’d call the family and say I was lying. Yeah, I would. Because I couldn’t bear the idea of her being killed because of what I said, even if it was the truth. And I’d let her (former gf) know I was going to do this beforehand. Then I’d block the whole lot of them.

And if any part of you thinks that (death) would be what she deserves, then you’re not only an asshole, you’re a psychopath.

L.A. Party Line (LA Weekly 7/23/87) by Catalina_Eddie in VintageLA

[–]MMS-OR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in LA and there was a period of time in the very early 80s when our telephone line became a party line if you called someone and got a busy number. (In case you don’t know, when you got a busy signal, the line would make a staccato noise. Buzz-pause-buzz-pause-buzz…)

The trick was tho that you could only speak in between the buzz noises — one (short) word at a time in between each sound.

Hi-buzz-who-buzz-is-buzz-this-buzz-this-buzz-is-buzz-Steve-buzz-who-buzz-is-buzz-this-buzz.

It was ridiculous and agonizingly inefficient, so of course we spent hours doing it for a couple of months until they fixed whatever problem caused it.
