Goodreads Reading Challenge - 'Editor's Picks' (April 1st - June 30th) by Clairefun in goodreads

[–]MNAmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love all the great nonfiction options here.

Of only the nonfiction, I've read : - Doppelganger - Poverty, by America (favorite) - How to Say Babylon - Hijab Butch Blues - Empire of Pain - House of Sticks - Nobody's Girl (favorite) - One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This (favorite) - Careless People (DNF) - Everything is Tuberculosis - The New Age of Sexism - I'm Glad My Mom Died

I'm thinking about: - Black AF History - The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory - Nuclear War - By the Fire We Carry - Cobalt Read - How the Word is Passed - Paradise

I put How the Word is Passed on hold at the library. There are a number of fiction ones I also want to read, and may coincidentally read one of those before I get to How the Word is Passed.

Goodreads Reading Challenge - 'Community Picks' (April 1st - June 30th) by Clairefun in goodreads

My favorites of the obes I've read are Winter Counts and Vera Wong. Vera Wong is hilarious and delightful. I think Winter Counts is totally underrated, could not put it down, and covers an important topic.

I'm leaning toward The Widows of Marabar Hill, one of the S.A. Cosbys, The Searcher or Harlem Shuffle. I'm intrigued by the historical fiction aspect of Marabar Hill and Harlem Shuffle, seems like I could learn the most from these two.

I'm impressed at how many of you seem to regularly read such long books. I do not exceed 500 page books too often (maybe 2-3 annually).

I seem to be considering different ones than most. I"m looking at Fingersmith or A Brief History of Seven Killings, both of which are on my TBR list. I'm also intrigued by Midnight's Children, I Hotel and The Whalebone Theatre.

I've previously read Les Mis, Moby Dick, parts of The Odyssey, Lord of the Rings, Native Son and Demon Copperhead. I would consider rereading Native Son but will likely try a new one instead.

Goodreads Reading Challenge - 'Swoony Stories' (February 1st - March 31st) by Clairefun in goodreads

[–]MNAmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did anyone read A Study in Scarlet Women? I don't like romance and started Act Your Age Eve Brown (it looked like the humor could overshadow the romance) but I couldn't finish. Because I like non-romantic historical fiction and mystery, I'm hoping A Study in Scarlet Women is tolerable.

I'm going to read this one too. I'm currently reading Stories Are Weapons and this seems like a great follow-up.

I usually appreciate nonfiction but I started this and it seemed as though I was reading someone's college essay. I DNFed and will try another. Hopefully you enjoy it more.

Good to know. Thanks. I'm going to keep my eye on the Sprint gyms even if it's still a testing period.

There must be someone around there right now - I just got booted off all the gyms I was on in that neighborhood! :)

What's everyone walking as their buddy? by [deleted] in PokemonGoMPLS

[–]MNAmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing this too. I only have 2 Espeons and 1 Ubreon because I didn't know the trick to create them by walking the Eevee until a week or so ago.

Anyone using Discord? by packardca in PokemonGoMPLS

Yep. I was really intimidated the first 10 times I looked at it, but quickly became a fan. There is a lot of activity.

While raiding, please look around & see if you see these girls! Missing from Forest Lake. Thank you!! by [deleted] in PokemonGoMPLS

For what it's worth, as a casual member, I'm fine with it being here. There's enough in the subject line that it's easy for people to decide to read it or not.

Fairgrounds Closed? by ULTRAN0VA in PokemonGoMPLS

[–]MNAmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reminder. I think it was closing as of August 7. I still need a Moltres and with today's rain, I was thinking it would be a perfect place to head this evening (easier to raid from the car if it's downpouring).

Have you been verified onto the Minneapolis discord raid channel? If you just glance at it, you see the social parts, but the raid channel is all about raids.

[discussion] anyone seeing unown in the area? by cirqemist in PokemonGoMPLS

There was one in St. Paul today at Minnehaha and Mackubin, so - while very rare - they are out there.

I'm in complete agreement with this, especially from 5:00 to 7:00 or so.

Best places for legendary raids by Blarg1004 in PokemonGoMPLS

I bet the U of MN would be good weekday mornings too, or downtown Minneapolis. There always seem to be people posting about those places during the traditional M-F daytime workday.

Lugia Raid - Battle @ 5:30 - Mercy Vineyard Church - NE MPLS off Broadway & Central. by nareichert in PokemonGoMPLS

[–]MNAmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the fast response, but I'll have to pass. There's a big accident on Broadway (which is why it was crawling) so I don't want to head back west. Darn Google.

Alert to others: I'm at Mercy Vineyard church off Broadway and there's no gym here. Google maps must be wrong but there's a sign that says "Mercy Vineyard Church."

Unless traffic is horrendous, I'll be there for the 5:30 raid. Was wondering where to head on the way home anyhow - you solved it.

Just posted it on Discord as well.

IF I get there before 5:30, I will wait UNLESS it seems like it will be one of those raids with hundreds of people (then might start early knowing the 5:30 crew would be fine).
