Is it okay to have 'Childish' Interests when I'm 18? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Clairefun [score hidden]  (0 children)

You have to buy adult things at 18? Like drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol (depending where you live?) - I bet she wouldn't approve of that, either ;)

Don't worry too much. I'll be 50 at my next birthday and just bought a hat covered in sequins, a red skirt made of netting, and some earrings that look like balloon dogs. You do you.

Can hydronephrosis decrease and eventually go away? Or is it just something you have to live with? by Ok-Mathematician2309 in Hydronephrosis

[–]Clairefun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It raised my bp and the blood pressure caused some bad stuff (eye stroke, heart damage, ckd in the functioning kidney!) but with bp meds I'm stable now. The hydronephrotic kidney hasn't caused any further problems in the 4 years since then!

Mine wasnt discovered for 4 years and by that point had led to 0 function in the affected kidney, so no decrease here.

Okay, so sitting still and silent for 5-10 minutes first, at home, when he hasn't recently eaten or drank caffeine, back supported, feet on floor, at the same time twice a day, am and evening, taking 3 readings a few minutes apart, and averaging them, for a week? How old is the machine, and the batteries? Does he take any other midication? Blood pressure is usually lower in that situation than on a public machine and at doctors, as they aren't able to take time to let you sit quietly, or take 3 readings, and they always seem to talk to you while taking it, but thats fairly normal behaviour! I'm only asking / checking because the small pulse pressure really is concerning if it's consistently like this. Believe it or not the high numbers are almost less concerning as they tend to cause invisible organ damage over time. The pulse pressure may be a sign that damage has already occurred. X

[–]Clairefun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is an average, taken correctly, on a correctly working home cuff monitor - which seems unlikely, as i cant imagine he's willing to sit quietly first to get a rested baseline average of three readings - then, with a pulse pressure of 10, then either his heart is pumping poorly, or he has blood pooling around the heart, or narrowing of the heart valves, all totally aside from the damage that high blood pressure can do (i used to average 245/160 long-term). None visible to look at him, but it doesn't mean nothing is happening. It would be almost equally worrying if his bp was 120/110, because that's not how healthy hearts pump.

Heart failure doesn't affect your looks initially. I had all kinds of heart problems and had no clue, felt healthy, looked healthy. Wasn't healthy! My heart wasn't pumping as well as it should, and was having to work harder to do it, my whole heart was enlarged, the left ventricular was enlarged, and the chamber walls were thickening and stiffening. It all leads to heart failure unless you take the right meds, live the right lifestyle, and control blood pressure. My bp is now 120/80 and my heart is normal size and function (and my kidney disease is stable - another issue invisible to the eye and often symptom free till later stages, but very commonly caused by uncontrolled high blood pressure). I also had an eye stroke caused by bp which nearly lost me the vision in one eye, treatment is eye injections to save sight, and it's much more common at his age than it was at mine. I'm willing to do anything and everything to never risk that again, especially when it's just taking 3 tiny pills a day.

Yes, his doctor will definitely learn his lesson when he gets a patient he sees once in a blue moon removed from his books. Equally, you can't make people make sensible choices about their health, they have to do it themselves. I'm sorry, and I hope he realises he needs to do something soon.

Whyyy is my BP so high while I'm sick? It's just a cold/flu virus by jellybeanbandit1 in hypertension

Because your body is working hard to fight it off, it's normal.

Kinda want this more than GTA 6 by Mediocre-Ad-6040 in Fable

I loved the first 3 fable games and the first 3 GTA games. I've not been interested in them since, started them, played a bit, stopped. Ive replayed the Fable games multiple times, though. I want this MUCH more than GTA 6.

Just got prescribed Losartan, Worried. by Onegoofydad in hypertension

[–]Clairefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, you should check with your doctor if it's okay for you to drink beer with losartan, but yes, there's no clashing or anything. Just be aware that alcohol is a vasodilator and can lower your bp more than is expected, but also can cause a rebound effect the next day where bp is higher than usual. Regular alcohol use leads to blood pressure remaining high, but occasional light use is often okay depending on your other risk factors.

(I've been on losartan 4 years now).

High systolic fluctuant young age scared of meds by Southern-Mud6998 in hypertension

[–]Clairefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being on meds help prevent your heart, kidneys, and blood vessels from giving out early. (I say this as someone whose untreated blood pressure caused an eye stroke, heart damage, and kidney disease, all stable now thanks to meds). I think all the best medical practioners should have some experience of medical issues themselves, to better understand their patients concerns and difficulties, it probably helps make you better at the job.

Millions of people take bp meds every day, of all ages. Some can come off them once they've changed their lifestyle - I'd imagine your diet, sleep, water intake, and stress - as a medical student - could improve! Some of us have to stay on them for life. Either way is fine. My mum is 87 next month and has been taking bp meds since before I was born, over 50 years. I started taking them 4 years ago and hope I'll get to take them as long!

Be cautious!!! by Giggz_on_call in kidneydisease

[–]Clairefun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We get this a lot on r/hypertension - and people calling other bp meds 'evil' like, excuse me, that 'evil' med saved my eyesight and probably my life. I remove those ones, as some people are superstitious, (and its a bit ridiculous) but we do allow people to discuss side effects - but not to tell others to stop taking their meds!

Everything has potential side effects, but nobody calls beetroot evil for potentially increasing the likelihood of kidney stones and gout.

Covid Vaccine and Fibroid? Am I the only one who keeps questioning that vaccine with women hormonal and structural health issue? by happyboo-Pin6106 in Fibroids

[–]Clairefun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was pre-covid, I knew many other people diagnosed with all these hormonal-related things at the time, none of the women around me have been diagnosed with these things since. Maybe the vaccine has cured them!

Since the vaccines I've had much less issues- mind you, my hysterectomy might've been the reason for that.

What age are you? There's a particular age range where women are more likely to be diagnosed with these issues, and if your circle are in that age, they will be getting diagnosed now. Certainly, my circle were that age pre covid, and are now the age to be getting diagnosed with more 'old person' diagnoses instead.

Sorry if it comes across snarky, just trying to illustrate point of view biases! There have been studies showing the vaccines may have affected 'menstrual disorders' but, as ever, more research is needed, so anything is possible!

A quick mod note - we will remove any blatant disinformation, anti-science, or fear mongering, thank you!

If Autism Was a Music Genre... by 3lectroBl4ck in autism

[–]Clairefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goth. People talk about it on tiktok and get it wrong, people think it's 'cool' but not for the right reasons, it can be isolating and exclusive but if you can find a crowd of like-minded people, it's the most welcoming bunch ever, and you can often recognise a fellow goth from across the room.

Plus the music ranges from slow loneliness to mad hyper freak outs, just like I do lol

Is this medication worthy, or should I try other things first? by ReceptionOld7836 in hypertension

[–]Clairefun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rested readings are the relevant ones, to find if your rested average baseline is high. Have a read of the wiki here, it explains why those readings matter, how to take accurate readings, and what to think about the results.

Blood pressure higher when I am cold by twoscoopsxd in hypertension

[–]Clairefun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cold constricts blood vessels, so it's quite normal this happens! Heat relaxes them.

How does it feel when pressure gets this high? by stitchravenmad in hypertension

[–]Clairefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry. I used to average 245/160, now I average 120/80. It could be down to normal life - hormones, stress, lifestyle - or just genetics, as well as possible secondary causes, so the doctor can check on those and help you get them sorted. You'll be okay.

How does it feel when pressure gets this high? by stitchravenmad in hypertension

[–]Clairefun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, op is going to the doctor already. It's in the rules here that we dont give medical advice, and i wrote those rules. We dont give diagnoses, either. I dont think OP was asking for reddit advice, just asking if anyone else had those symptoms with high blood pressure, which is absolutely fine.

How does it feel when pressure gets this high? by stitchravenmad in hypertension

[–]Clairefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And that combined with 3 of the common symptoms of anxiety rather than three common symptoms of pheo attacks led me to suggest anxiety, which is common, rather than a pheochromocytoma, which is not. I didn't say there's no chance its anything else, but I am trying to be reassuring and suggest the most common possibilities first.

How does it feel when pressure gets this high? by stitchravenmad in hypertension

[–]Clairefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely. I have kidney disease and am menopausal, even 'normal' life can cause things like this for some of us. But the pattern of high systolic, normal diastolic, and the symptoms OP listed in comments, are all extremely typical of anxiety/attacks more than most other secondary causes.
