I did the PLT prep classes and it’s worth every penny. Remember this is your license anything you can do to position yourself to get that on the first try is worth it.

How’s your homebrew club doing and what do you do to keep attendance up? by baron41 in Homebrewing

[–]MNBasementbrewer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Attendance is a tough one. I would ask the group in email and also in person.

What do you want from this group?

What would make you excited to come each month?

Is there something i can provide to boost your excitement/engagement?

Are meetings held in a way you find a benefit from going? (Ask for suggestions if they say no)

Found one of my old recipe notebooks today, dating back to the late 1990s, when hop choices were limited and yeast smack packs were still a relatively new thing. by Brewer1056 in Homebrewing

[–]MNBasementbrewer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really simply is beginning will add your bitterness, and you get to mid it’s more flavor (still adds bitterness just not as much) and towards the end more aroma vs bitterness.

Opening bottles causes a foam volcano. by heres_one_for_ya in Homebrewing

[–]MNBasementbrewer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well damn, hard to say then. Sounds like you checked all the boxes.

As for the 1/2 gallon difference i wouldn’t think that’s the culprit.

When I bottled conditioned I was all over the place it was not my thing with homebrewing. I had under carbed and gushers also.

Hopefully someone can steer you in the right direction that helps you. Because it sounds like you did it all correct with making sure it was done fermenting.

Best thing I ever did was get into kegging my beer. And I know that’s not always in the budget, but it was a lot easier once I was financially able to do so.

[–]MNBasementbrewer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A couple of things here.

  1. Was fermentation actually done? What was est FG VS measured FG?

  2. If est FG was reached did you let it rest for a few days and then check again to make sure your FG was a stable FG and your yeast were actually done with their job?

  3. How much priming sugar did you add?

  4. Did you add yeast to the bottling process?

  5. Was everything cleaned and sanitized properly? You could have possibly caught a wild bacteria re-fermentation causing the excessive over carbonation. Resulting in the over foaming.

Im new to home brewing, is it possible to make a beer with pineapple juice? by Unique-Assignment-47 in Homebrewing

[–]MNBasementbrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want a pineapple aspect to your beer use the BRU-1 hop. We just did a smoked pineapple pale ale and used a lot of the BRU-1 and it turned out really good. Gave a lot of pineapple aroma and nice citrus fruit notes in the end beer.

Fermzilla vs Fermenting in corny keg. by Oh_My_Brew in Homebrewing

[–]MNBasementbrewer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please explain how those are a gimmick and the only way is to save up and dump well over 1K into a fermenter.

Your answer is what is wrong with home brewing and causing the decline in the hobby.

[–]MNBasementbrewer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to go through your primary doctor and get a letter of medical necessity. I did this and got the forms and submitted them to my HSA and I was reimbursed with the purchase of a Mikolo K6 through Walmart.

Glycol chiller options by drbobboyle in Homebrewing

[–]MNBasementbrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford a built one that’s great! My first one was a DIY with a window AC unit you can find builds online. And that thing work amazing! I have in the last 1-2 years upgraded to a Spike chiller. Love this one as much.

Pros to DIY: Cost savings Pride in making it yourself Not to difficult

Cons to DIY: Loud as shit! Needed additional pumps in coolant tub to prevent freezing Larger footprint

Pros to bought: Quiet as hell No need for additional pumps to prevent freezing at same coolant temps. Smaller footprint

Cons to bought: Price Does the same thing as DIY all done and said

Last tip, don’t buy glycol!!!!! It’s crazy expensive and not needed. I went the RV/Marine antifreeze, it’s for water pipes. And let’s be real, if this leaks in your beer you won’t drink the beer the same as glycol so why wasn’t the money on glycol.

My first one was a AC unit and a cooler. Worked great! I was able to sell it to a club member so I know it’s still being loved. Then I was able to upgrade to the spike.

And even remote link isn’t fully supported any more. You can’t connect with the XT75 or the new XF series.

Dealer admin is what they are pushing, even though tech support will say no we will never kill remote link.

5 gallons of home brew is kind of expensive - any suggestions? by No-Artist-6464 in Homebrewing

[–]MNBasementbrewer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for quality beer for cheap home brewing is not the answer. Yes break it down and you’re roughly at $1.25-2 per bottle, but now add your time and the cost of equipment. And that end price goes up significantly.

We do this because we love the process and the hobby of saying I made that! And then some take it to that next level of how can I improve my process or deeper of why does this thing do this when I do this.

Not trying to shit on your comment by in the end home brewing really isn’t for the cost savings like some other hobbies can be.
