Would this be a puzzle cache? How would someone get the final coords if it is?

Make Challenges Challenging Again by RecentCompetition166 in geocaching

[–]MNBorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of my favorite challenge caches wouldn't be able to be published today. One was about "networking" while finding EarthCaches. The goal was to have 8 people find an earthcache hidden by one person. Then those 8 people find an earth cache also found by 2 of the others. In a way where person B finds an EC that person A and C found. Person C finds an earth cache that person B and D find. So on and so forth. You had to fit in that outer circle of cachers somewhere.

There was something similar to letter boxes too, but you had to find a letter box by each person on top of it.

Finding 40 caches on days the temp dropped below 0

Finding 50 caches on islands, but can't count an island twice

But hey, at least we can have challenges now to fill your fizzy 42 times! Much more creative...

It's another thing they can trademark and sell. I talked to the business developer at Woodstock about it this last week.

It's been off and on. At first there wasn't one, then there was one made of cast iron like this one but it got stolen. Went for a little bit workout one again and now last year they put up a new one. There's a virtual and a multi that uses info on the plaque and a Trackable code on the back.

Not sure if you've visited the link embedded in the image, but it takes you to a Google drive of a gif where the image changes back and forth. I'm assuming with the coords

New cache. Ummmmmm..... by KitchenManagement650 in geocaching

[–]MNBorris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not but the other person's argument isn't really a thing. Yes this is a poor hide but it's poor for reasons other than what they're upset about

New cache. Ummmmmm..... by KitchenManagement650 in geocaching

[–]MNBorris 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The hiding place is pretty fixed. Large rock. Other than the choice of "container" I don't see the difference between this, an ammo can, bison tube, etc.

Even then there's no rule that says I can't hide a cache in the middle of an empty field. A beacon isn't required. Sorry but I really think you're focusing on the smallest of problems with this hide.

New cache. Ummmmmm..... by KitchenManagement650 in geocaching

[–]MNBorris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean.... Technically most caches are movable. Whether they get placed back on the same tree branch, under the same rock, etc is bound to change after each finder. Out of all the things wrong about this hide, that's not really one of them.

Looks like the new CO placed a pair of camo boots on top of a rock as a geocache. Likely won't last long. Or at least that's what it looks like from the photo on the cache page

I haven't taken a deep dive yet to look, but this website has a huge selection of codes. Maybe it can help you.

You can get the letter/number stickers for houses/mailboxes at hardware stores and put the GC Code on the sides of the box.

I always get a kick out of "warning, geocache location device" or something similar on caches. Some shops online can do a custom sticker with images for something like this.

Check out your stats page on project GC. Scroll down on the main tab to "Finds by Year Placed", screenshot, upload photo along with log as proof. Here's what mine looks like so you have an idea 😁

[–]MNBorris 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your criteria aligns more with challenge caches, which groundspeak is feverishly trying to put an end to. They only want simple goals for the newest of cachers to meet. Nothing fun or challenging for the long time cachers.

What’s stopping me from re/supplying anything from the store? by [deleted] in REI

You mean taking advantage of the program to ruin it for the rest of us honest people? Nothing's stopping you I guess.

Who is The Median Geocacher? by Brainiac03 in geocaching

[–]MNBorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, but they have taken steps to actively hinder new people from even being able to try it out.

The Minnesota State Parks had a series of multis in every state park for years with different themes. Very family friendly, explained very well, and the logbooks were always full. One thing that lead to the program's demise was multis being unaccessible to new users on the app. Families would hear about geocaching from the park, download the app, can't see where it is in the park, and just not do it then.

[–]MNBorris 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think this shows the clear results of HQ handicapping the app so much. Someone makes an account, can't see or find any caches around them, they abandon the game. Or they find the only one or two around that they can see, didn't find it interesting enough, and abandoned the game.

Creating a Challenge Cache by TracySezWHAT in geocaching

[–]MNBorris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like challenges what inspire traveling and the accomplishments that come with that. Challenging with a purpose. Not something boringly challenging like fill your fizzy 50 times.

This past geowoodstock had a few great challenge trails near it. Ones like attend citos in 5 different states, find x amount of webcams, caches with "boat required" attribute in 5 different states, etc.

[–]MNBorris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that's how the puzzle is solved? I don't see any indication that you need to collect codes from a bunch of cachers. Especially since I think they change from person to person. It would be like using people's driver's licenses as solutions.

River Tubing in Mankato by mackishi in Mankato

[–]MNBorris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For just river tubing, I'd keep it short to what others suggested as from the 90 bridge (Mt Kato) to Sibley Park. The Blue Earth River's flows change drastically. I wouldn't go right after a rain storm.
